Angle iron would possibly be heavier than necessary for the gas can carrier, but it couldn't hurt.  Make it the full height of the tailgate.  For the spare tire carrier, angle iron would be okay.  The M-38 used two lengths of hat channel with holes where needed, again full tailgate height.
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable

I decided to try to do a summer canvas top for my Jeep with Chris, that works with upholstery. This morning I loaded the Jeep with pieces of canvas I found at the war surplus and went to his place to start marking a summer top .Here are some pictures of today’s work so far.

Here is Chris working on the canvas.

We are going to try to finish the top tomorrow if everything goes go.

Last night I did finishing touches on the canvas top like painting the end of the straps so they wouldn’t come apart.

I had my jeep out yesterday for a small drive a the camp. The camp is in my back yard about 1/2 miles in the woods. Abby my dog and I can wait for the Spring to come. The rebuild was finish 2 years ago and I drive it every chance I get. I got over 5500 miles on it . In the summer  it’s my daily driver. The Jeep is used for Car shows, parades and long drives. Last summer I was approached by a family of a WW11  veteran if they could use my Jeep for his last drive  after the funeral  with his ashes.  I couldn’t say yes  fast enough. I was also contacted by the Legion in Shediac for November 11  Memorial Day parade. There is not a lot of Veterans left from World War II . That day  was too cold for the Veteran to be in my Jeep. But it was still a go day. Here are some pictures.

That me and Abby at a parade in Sackville NB.The Jeep made the local new paper.

The Family of the WWII Veteran at the funeral. His last drive.

November 11 Memorial Day in Shediac NB .It was to cold for the Veteran for the parade.
The family contacted me after and next summer he wants a drive in the Jeep.
I will try hard to make it  happened .

My Jeep has close to 6000 miles since my rebuild,so this winter it’s time for maintenance. I took the front end apart to check the king pin bearings, wheel bearings and axle shafts.I had used a Lucas red “N” tacky grease. The grease really works great.Everything was still soaked as the day it was put together. I cleaned all the bearings and the axle shafts. All the bearings were still like new,so I repacked them and the axle shafts.I did the preload on the king pin bearings with a  fish scale .Everthing is back together, all is left to do is bleed the brakes.

I been working on my front seat cushions. I found I was seating to high when I had my canvas top on.So I remove 2” of foam from the bottom pan. I did the driver seat and that should work .Still have to do the passenger seat.
Working on the passenger seat bottom pan.

Both sides done.

Yes Phil I love working on my Jeep it is one of my best hobbies.

Today I painted my antenna and bracket.A friend of mine gave me a white fiberglass antenna about 3 months ago so I’m trying to make it work for my Jeep. I needed something for the base of my antenna to make it look a little better so I modified a muffler from a lawn mower.I just welded a washer with a threaded bolt for the antenna to attach .Here is a picture of the painted muffler that I’m using.Tomorrow the paint will be dry and I will have pictures of everything together.

I found that I had some play in my steering box bushings.I installed a rebuild kit from Ron  Fitzpatrick and reinstalled with my restored steering wheel from my 43 MB part Jeep.

Today before I installed my left fender after all my repairs been done I always wanted to made a stencil for my brake fluid. I wanted to make sure that only DOT 5 Silicone brake fluid is used. I installed the stencil on the top of the frame close to the master cylinder .
