I have the same problem - my jeep has to stay outdoors through the year. You could get a plating kit - but it's expensive and not easy to do. You could clean the rust off using a wire brush/drill and then either spray them with clear coat or black/metallic paint.
Or - my favourite - you could clean them, heat with a blow torch until glowing, then drop them in a small pan of normal engine oil. When cool they will have a nice blackened/rust resistant finish.

I diy plate, its cheap, easy to do, and looks great.
I use pure white vinegar, 50/50 with water. For the Zinc I use the pure stuff, from roofing supply store. Put the zinc in for an hour or so to build up the ion content. A small 500ma/1A wall wort battery charger works well. (To high an amperage and it "pits" or builds "whiskers" etc) Either blast or wire wheel the part, then put in the mixture using metal wire. I use concrete tie wire since it's cheap and easy to do. Pull part out when it's dull gray, brush with stainless steel brush, repeat till it's the way you want it. + to the zinc, - to the part. Super super easy, and Cheap! (You dont need a 50' roll, just used as an example) https://www.amazon.com/Zinc-Armor-1-roll-Prevent-Fungus/dp/B001QV3GI0 |

cdn2a, thanks for the great tip! I tried using zinc chromate in a Parkerizing solution for bolts and small brackets on my antique Harley and wasn't too happy with the results(too grey) Joe Wadoyado
