where is everyone hooking their safety chains once the trailer is attached to the ball?  I hae the original early style hoks, and they do not fit the holes in the drawbar, and the chains really do not have enough length to go beyond the drawbar.

Mike, I've always speculated that to be the reason for the design change found in the later hooks.  My suggestion would be to mount two repo military tow hook eyes.  The hooks were designed for them.  The chain length is certainly inadequate for civy application.  Your only option is to extend your chain.

I know Ron Fitz has them, and several other suppliers probably do.

You have to remember the early trailers were all mil surplus parts so the hooks were not designed for the civy application.

I have an NOS early pintle hitch kit that has the above mentioned eyes that were used as the bottom bolts when mounting the pintle hitch on both Mil and Civy Jeeps.

Those of us with rear PTO gear boxs can't use the correct mounting holes for this purpose, so I think obtaining a pair of these eyes and choosing a location in the drawbar on either side of the drawbar hitch would be appropriate.

Heres another alternative:

thx for the input, i am going to order one of the pintle chain loops, and install it in the triangle ball plate, there is an extra hole in the plate just off of the edge of the drawbar.....

Hi Lowenuf,
To be honest I don´t understand where will you install your chains.
Where is the extra hole in the plate ?.
Mine has only 3 holes......2 for fix it to the draw bar and the third for the ball.
Cheers,

I had a plate at one time that had a eye bolt in that hole, probably used  for the chain hooks.

Charlie, my plate is just like the one in the following pic... see the hole in the center, just outside of the drawbar edge?
