An old friend sold me a jeep. It was her dads but he passed away. She kept it for many years but finally decided to let me buy it.  She had the title but it was still in her dads name and it took a while for her to get it able to be transferred.  She needed his death certificate but she got it taken care of and I transferred the title over to me.  I was thinking about replacing the barely readable data plates on the firewall so I was looking at them the other day...
It's not the same serial number as the title I have for it.

I have pics of the original title from 1973 in her dads name which also says the new number, but this aint that jeep! (unless the tub was swapped)  I still have her number and called her to ask about it.  She had no idea how it could have happened and only remembers her dad having the one jeep. Both firewall plates match, the frame plate is torn in half because of a frame repair.

What would you do?

Ignore the problem and get new data plates?

Often states registered vehicles by the engine vin, here in Virginia they did. I would start there and see if that’s the case, unfortunately if the engine was swapped in the past and wasn’t registered properly at the time it makes things more complicated.

You want to do it legally.

In most states a vehicle this old, especially one which was last registered 50 years ago, can be registered in various ways without a title in hand.

I have a 1967 CJ5 which was last registered in Georgia in 1968 when it was traded in to a car dealership and they just used it as a tender on their used car lot up until 1979 then it was parked.

I have the original title, I have paperwork from the car dealer showing transfer of ownership, I have paperwork from where I bought the Jeep from the estate of the owner of the dealership, and an affidavit from the car dealer's son as executor of the estate.

None of that paperwork was any good. The DMV would not register the Jeep in my name based on the paperwork because it had been so long since the vehicle was last registered.

Then the clerk told me of an easier way. I had to bring the Jeep to the DMV to have a "VIN Verification" done by their officer. In some cases the county sheriff's office will do this at wherever the vehicle is located, but in my county the vehicle has to be brought to the DMV parking lot.

I trailered the Jeep down to the DMV, their officer came out and made a rubbing of the ID plate and filled out a form. I walked back inside and after about 30 minutes registration was completed based on the data plate ID (which happened to match the worthless title I had).

In your case the data plate ID does not match the title you have, but if your state will register an old vehicle by doing a VIN Verification, that is the way I would do it and have a title actually matching the vehicle.

You could do it the way you described, but changing the VIN number on a vehicle is illegal in most states.
If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

Have Robert from the Netherlands make you a new serial number plate to match your title.
According to DMV you own whatever the title reads. Period.
Without a title the Jeep you received has no value other than it’s parts.

Both good idea's.

I'm trying to figure out how I'd ever buy anything that has a title and not bother to look and see that the numbers match.
After all, it's the sole reason for a title, isn't it? Maybe I'm mistaken.

X3......that's what I would do too.

As a matter of fact let us know how that works out.  Was over on his website the other night and it didn't seem like it was working just right for me. And I couldn't really tell whether he was still working from that website or not.

Regardless, in his pictured plates I didn't notice one that looked like a 2A firewall plate which is what I wanted.

+1, this is what I did on the Black Beauty.  The title showed a long gone engine #, I just had Robert make me a new plate to match that.  Saved the original.....

I got a set of plates for a CJ2A from Robert, and the firewall plate was exactly like an original except for looking brand new.

How long ago?

I'm not disputing the authenticity of his product, I've seen them before and they are GREAT right down to the font of the numbers. (which is usually the dead give away)

My comment was more web related I guess....just didn't see what I knew he had on his site. I had heard rumors he was only working through ebay and didn't know how true those stories were.

Has anybody made contact fairly recently....I could spring for one anytime now if I can get one.

I bought a Bantam plate from him back in October.
My old one was getting very hard to read.
Perfect quality as usual.

I did send him an email the other day to get a quote. He responded last night with one.  Looks like he’s still doing them and I’ll probably end up going that route.

I found his info on his eBay page, his website was hard to navigate.

Yes, that's what I was getting at with my post.... I had found the website but not much satisfaction from it.

I guess I'll just email him and do it that way then. Sounds like the preferred method.

I got mine two years ago, and we did communicate by email. I think I went directly through his website at first and then through email. They were perfectly made.
