i noticed shocks at Walck's show separate part numbers for front and rear while Monroe and Gabriel shocks from Parts Geek show the same one for all positions.

Did I look at something wrong? Perhaps the Monroes have a range of stroke that allows them to be used on either the front or the rear?

I would also appreciate recommendations for a decent stock replacement that's gas charged. I don't need or want Heavy Duty shocks that result in a "stiffer" ride. Just a good quality stock replacement.

I would expect that the bilsteins are likely the best.
I hear they will easily last 100K  mikes.
I just bought a full set of KYB 344426.
Probably every bit ad good as the bilsteins but much cheaper and I don’t expect them to last forever.
My next choice goes to Monroe which was the OEM brand.
If you do go HD then the Rancho 5119 is just that.
I prefer to go with all 4 shocks being identical; but that really depends on springs used and whether or not your shock mounts are standard.

Yeah, I found conflicting accounts when I was looking for shocks as well.  Some places said the fronts and rears were different, and some places said they were all the same.  I ordered from Walcks cause I figured they might be pretty spot on, and they had different shocks.

I'd like to hear what the jeep police say...

...maybe I don't...

Willys built these Jeeps and so Willys determines all of the standards. The Jeep police only exist to enforce those standards.

The very earliest 1945 CJ2A standard specifies use of Monroe shocks.
The front shocks were specified as 10-7/16” compressed and 16-1/16” extended.
The rear shocks were specified as 10-3/4” compressed and 16-9/16” extended.
Ever after that time all 80” wheelbase CJ’s  were specified at:
10-3/4” compressed and 17-1/2” extended at both front and rear.

That said a change in springs or spring pack thickness will effect the up/down location of the integral spring plate/ lower shock mount.
Most importantly you do not want the shock compressed length to limit the upward stuff of the axle.
That solely is the job of the axle bumpers.
Otherwise if the compressed length is too great you are forced to lower the axle bumpers via spacers or raise the vehicle along with it’s center of gravity.

Similarly you do not want the shock extended length to limit the potential droop by more than perhaps 1/2”.

I've had experience with KYBs on my`55 Chevy and liked them. Amazon carries the number oldtime provided for $22.00. I may go that way. If there's a problem with the stroke parameters, it's easy to do returns on Amazon.

Thanks all for the input.
