    Posted: 16 Aug. 2018 at 6:20pm
I was wondering if anyone else is running a factory Skinner fuel filter? I think the element is not really happy swimming in the Detroit areas's oxygenated/10% alcohol fuels. It started breaking down on me and the bits clogged the carb. So, I was wondering if anyone had a source for replacement elements for them?

Thanks,
Bill

Bill,
I have a NOS Skinner mounted on my current build.
I have not run any fuel through it yet.
Now you have me thinking about going back to my favorite  Carter sediment bowl.
You thinking the 10% alcohol is dissolving the bonding agent in the filter element ?

Is this the type of filter that is giving you difficulty with the ehtanol gas?

Mike S, yours is a Carter. Looks like it has the ceramic element. Nothing that ethanol will break down there. Keep an eye on the rubber gasket though.

Bruce, good idea I will try that.

Old time, mine was NOS too and I've been running it about 10 years now. The fiber itself isn't breaking down, but the base, the part that makes contact with the bottom of the bowl and the top of the housing. Its not the bonding agent, but the material itself is breaking down. If I have time tonight, I'll get a picture. I'm ASSUMING its the mixture of fuels over time causing the issue. Its been working great up until this summer.

Mike S, its not ceramic, its more of a fiber thing. It is intended to operate like a K&N filter. Pull it out once a year, blow it out with compressed air and reinstall.

Thanks,
Bill

I'll take a pic of my NOS Skinner  when I get home.
It's factory (optional) mounted onto fresh F-134...

The filter element in the link looks like the in-tank M38 filter. What are your element dimensions Bill?

RickG,

Thanks for the info. I did not know that. Interesting.

Scoutpilot said he still has some elements available.

Skinner box in poor shape.

Here's mine mounted on a rebuilt F-134.

Has factory optional fuel tube.

Bottom of filter

Top of filter.

Skinner vs Carter

Looks to me that the tall carter ceramic will fit perfectly inside the skinner bowl .
However a Carter style gasket will be required to seal the ceramic at top.

NOS Skinner and 2 NOS Carters

Here's the Carter mounted in place of the Skinner

This company makes helically wound filter elements but I don't know if you can buy directly from them. www.fujifilter.co.jp/en/application/spinningquench/
