Looking for pictures of anybody's 2As that have a SM420 and how they bent the cane to clear the stock seat. What gear was it in when you began your bends, etc. Any other helpful ideas.

I’ll get a picture and some measurements on mine. I recall us shortening quite a bite as well.

I’ll measure it.

In my build I'm using a t19 tucked under the dash. For the shifter I'm adapting to a M37 cane. It brings it right back to a good spot.

took me forever to get a picture - but here's the 420 shifter we modified. It was cut down and reshaped a bit.

For reference - it was bolted to a stock flathead bellhousing with no adapter/spacer. Motor was in the stock position. The shifter can came up through the floor a few inches rearward of the stock location.

Don't know if this helps as you really can't see it relative to seat position and so on.

Thanks nofender! looks like a 21" overall length with the 1st bend, and judging from the shadow pretty straight. A great place to start with my stock length shifter cane. That will help me get the shifter ball off my Rt hip socket when in reverse.
Was the trans end flat parallel with the hood or whatever it was laying on this this picture?

No. But I can square it up and give you a better overall length if that's what you are looking for.

On my t18 conversion on the 3B I started by putting it up in fist gear, heating it with a torch and getting it close in that position, then switched to reverse.  Tried it in all the gears, when I was happy with it I sawed it off to length and welded a bolt on top for the knob.

That sounds like a great plan, thanks

I bought a straight cane from Novak for the 420,  installed it and wow it sure did tighten up the shift pattern!  Ended up using a blue wrench to bend it straight back just a bit.  Now reverse doesn't hit the seat cushion and rest next to my leg!
 Old shifter pic

New shifter pic coming soon.

Bought  a straight 18" cane from Novak, I found the original cane was worn out, it had alot of wear in the factory pin hole that allowed it to have just a bit of slop to help getting it into gear.  I was going to leave it straight but after about 10 miles of shifting it was clear it only needed to be bent slightly rearward from the neutral position. I now works great. It removed 50% of the shift pattern.
