I am rebuilding an L-134 that has SPECIAL cast into the side of the block by the oil pressure gauge tap. It is # J172918 It came out of a 1948 CJ2a.
Does anyone know what this means? Tim Thank you. |

That's pretty cool....never have seen that.
Wonder if it is that super secret, high output, specially cast, experimental engine block?
Will be interesting to learn about this one.

Might be worth some more pictures of the rest of the block. Have you noticed any unique features other than the cast in SPECIAL on the side? Are the bores a standard size?
Definitely something we don't see every day, if ever.

Low, I thought I remembered something about that too and did a search before posting my first comment using special block....turned up a bunch of posts but nothing really relating.....most would include special, or especially or block
Guess maybe the search engine let us down...scrolled all the way through the list of posts that it gave me and turned up nothing.

Did you ever come up with a reason for the SPECIAL marking, Low?

doing a search for willys engine special shows the following at the cj3a site. maybe a clue here?
what is difference between farm jeep and jeep tractor?
Any Universal Jeep could have been outfitted to be a farm type Jeep simply by adding the appropriate options. Real Farm Jeeps had special serial number prefix. For example the first Farm Jeep VIN number is 451-GC1 10001. The first digit (4) indicates number of cylinders. The next two numbers (51) indicate the model year 1951. The next letter (G) indicates basic chassis model. The following letter (C) indicates body type, A is a stripped chassis, B is the regular Universal Jeep, C is the Farm Jeep and D is the Jeep Tractor.

Two jeeps on the road, one is close and the rest are dreams.

I found lowenuf's posting under SPEC engine casting.
It is a different casting, but close. I'll try the CJ3a links later... |
