Somewhere in Shadow's life, her hubcaps were painted white.  These are pretty rusty but I tried to strip the paint off one layer at a time like I did the tub ....

..... but the white paint was all I could find.  I saw no evidence of the letters being painted black but like I said, these hubcaps are very weathered.  I did find some hints of nickel or some other plating:

It is easier to see from the back side:

so I assume that the hubcaps were not painted since they are plated.  Was the SPEN logo painted black?  ..... Inconclusive.

I decided to take it easy on jpet for that one because I considered that an alernate interpretation would be if the Spen trailer were known as "Your on-the-trail, good, Spen trailer" where "Your" was intended to be possessive and the whole phrase was a tag line back in the day.

........ yes ...... that is what I was thinking too .....Big smile

I know it should have one, but I don't see one on the tailgate.  The letter spacing would suggest that there was not one.  I can always add it later I suppose.

One interesting point about this trailer is that the axle is round:

From what I've read over on the earlyCJ5 page, typically Spens had a square axle.

Anywho ........

From everything that I have read, and from what I have seen on Shadow, everything on the trailer originally was painted blue except for the wheels.  They were originally black.  Sure made things much easier.

Jeff, one thought just came to mind about the rear logo/catchphrase. Maybe it was intended to be read up and down, then it would say "Your good on the trail trailer" (just a passing thoughtLOL) Looks pretty spiffy though.

I have two bantams and both have round axles.  If Spens are supposed to be square then maybe someone swapped yours with a bantam axle?

Well it has Spen style hubs and the flanges are 6 lug. I'm pretty sure that the axle is original. It had the original paint on it.
