Jeff your safety chains appear to be the standard aftermarket safety chains you can still get today. I just found one in my shed this afternoon....Valley Industries used to supply them with the tow bars we rented out in the early 80's at Taylor Rental.. and you can buy those hooks with some chain attached to them from most trailer places today.

One note for those who have to pass a safety inspection. Many state inspectors won't allow a welded chain attachment point to the trailer anymore. Safety chains need to be bolted with an appropriately strong bolt or clevis style attachment. They don't trust our welding I guess.. The WWII chains were attached with a plate that was bolted to the trailer tongue IIRC.

Charlie,

The chains you see in the photo are the chains that were on Shadow when I got her. The only restoring I had to do was replace the floor, fix hubcaps, sandblast and paint. Shadow was in very good shape when I got her. The chains are standard welded link chain. I've never seen chain like your's (swing set chain) used as safety chain.

My tailgate chain is also welded link.

Hi,
tks again for your comment.
My question was about the wire twisted chain in the rear tail door and the one on the leg.
I agree with you that those chains are not good enough for be safety chains.Smile
I´m really interested in know more about the rest of chain welded in the bottom of the hitch.
Cheers,

.... my trailer has nothing welded there. My trailer has no twisted wire links. My rear chains look like the ones in these pictures:

http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/spen-trailer-the-shadow-project_topic17239_post164768.html#164768

........ I don't understand your question.

Charlie,

I'm sorry. I was mistaken

Turns out that my tailgate chains are twisted wire.

4 links counting the one that's welded to the bed.

Here are some more pics of the tongue and landing foot area:

Jeff,

Interesting to see your Fulton coupler is the one designed for tubular tongues.

Do any others with SPENs also have this design Fulton coupler?

Jpet,
one more time, tks a lot for your photos.
Sorry if my questions were not very clear, but I guess you answered me.
If you see your photo :

and my photo :
looks like the leg pin are simmilars (I can´t see very well your photo), but looks like yours had also welded something in the same area.
What do you think ?
Any chance to obtain a photo of that pin ?
Mine is broken, but I guess yours is in a good shapeWink

Hi Jpet,
I was looking one of the photos I obtained of the tail gate chain.
In my trailer there are 5 links, counting the one welded to the bed.Shocked
Is your chain welded to the bed in the same way than mine ? at 45°.
Cheers and thanks for share the Spen trailer information.

Yes, mine is worked similar to yours at an angle. Maybe mine had 5. Mine have covers so I could have made a mistake. I'm out of town till Wednesday. I'll take the covers off and report back when I'm home.

Hi Jpet,
don´t worry. I think doesn´t make sense to remove the covers just for count the links !
The good thing is that both trailers has same type of chains and welded to the bed.
That´s a characteristic of the Spen !
Cheers,
Charlie S.

Hi,
I continue looking for information about SPEN trailers in order to restore mine.
A friend of mine has a SPEN (it belonged to his grandfather) which it´s in a very good shape and very original.
I asked for some photos, but actually the trailer is in a garage and is difficult to reach it for take photos.
Nevertheless he sent me these 2 where it´s possible to see how the rear light is fixed to the trailer. The light is fixed to the plate bracket.
Apparently the light is welded to the plate bracket and separate from the trailer bracket (some ideas about this would be appreciated Shocked )
Hope someone can post more photos to this topic.
Cheers

Hi,
I started cleaning the SPEN hub cups.
Below a GREEN AND BLACK paint appeared what I believe was the original paint.
It looks like a WHITE PLATED color.
The SPEN letters were painted red,

Jpet, could you tell me which color code did you use on your hub cups.
The original color on mines is very similar.

Cheers,

Here is a discussion on my hubcaps with photos. White paint was all I could find. I believe they were not painted originally. They may have been plated. Mine were so badly rusted that I repaired them with fiberglass and I painted them with a metallic gray paint. Then I hi-lighted the Spen logo with black paint.
