hello
My Jeep starts great when cold but after it heats up it stalls and won’t run until it cools again. Any ideas? Thanks!

What do you mean it won't start? Do you mean it won't crank or won't fire.

Yeah, more info is needed. As I used to have to tell customers all the time, "It's awful hard to fix 'em over the phone".
Greeley? As in Colorado? BW

It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

So what happens, is that the jeep starts great and runs really well until it reaches temperature. At that point it bogs out in stalls when you give it gas. After that it turns over but does not start. I’m not sure if it’s not firing or it’s almost like flooded. I have checked the fuel line to make sure it’s not getting a vapor lock.

So this is probably a heat related gas or an electrical issue. Some ideas - Check these things once it is warm and dies:
1. Ohm out the spark plug wires and the coil wire. They should all Ohm out the same number of resistance. 2. Take off the distributor cap and see if there is moisture condensed on the in side of the cap. 3. I don't think you will have heated up the distributor enough to have a heat related condenser issue in just 1/2 mile drive - unless you are in low range first gear the whole way. Fuel, 1. Vapor lock of some sort. Is the fuel line close to the exhaust - pipe or manifold? 2. Is the heat riser stuck? How hot is this engine running? |

You may swap in a known good coil to rule that out as well...

I have had these symptoms caused by a plugged fuel filter screen in the carb. The fuel flow was so slow, it would run on the bowl contents and then die - about a mile down the road. After sitting a few hrs enough fuel would trickle through from the pressurized line to start the engine.....
I went though all the electrical stuff before finding the screen completely packed with junk.

Thanks for your reply! Something else I’ve noticed is that it will actually run fine at idle. It seems that it only happens after I takeoff down the road and try to give it gas. Even when it heats up it sits and runs and idols fine. I’m wondering if that could possibly be a result of a plug fuel screen? Did you also notice that

Mine actually eventually wouldn't idle either. It would start from cold fine and run fine for a mile or so then start to die and sputter, eventually die completely. Usually you could restart it and idle but would die again and eventually not restart at all until it had sat for a few hrs. Mine has a Solex carb and there is a screen I didn't know about very near the fuel inlet to the carb. There is a fitting that you pull out (don't need to remove carb) which has a screen behind it.

I should mention, I added an inline fuel filter between the tank and fuel pump to permanently resolve.
