Every year around my birthday I invite my siblings (there’s nine of us) and their spouses to have dinner with me. As part of my tradition, most years I write some bad poetry and share it with them. So this is me reading my birthday poem for 2023. If you make it through the full four minutes or so, you’ll get a little different viewpoint of where my heart lies, than I usually present here.
I’ll put the full written text in a reply. |

When I’m Sixty-Four By Stan Fuller I had a transistor radio hid under my pillow, I should have been sleeping, tomorrow to school I must go. But Mom and Dad were upstairs and they wouldn't know, I was tuned in to KCPX, the Skinny Johnny Mitchell Show. Dad liked country music so that’s what we heard, While riding in the car or if he sang a few words. Buck Owens, and Dolly, Merle Haggard or Johnny Cash All from the speaker in the Oldsmobile’s dash. But once I heard the Hollies playing that song, About a Long Cool Woman, it wouldn’t be long “Til I found the rock stations that could be found, On the radio dial around my hometown. Lynn Leamon and Johnny Mitchell are the DJ’s I recall, That were rocking the airwaves and helping me fall Quite in love with rock music, that back beat, the sound, That gets your toes tapping and acting the clown. One day I heard a tune by the boys from Liverpool About a guy who’s hoping to not look a fool. When he reaches an age now knocking at my door Yes, I’m talking about twoscore and 24 more. Will you still need me? was the question Sir Paul asked. A question for one who wants their chosen to hold fast. I too have these thoughts from time to time, As the years roll by, will you still be mine? Now that I’m “older, losing my hair,” I can’t really play basketball, or escape from a bear, I still have delusions of great feats of grandeur, That I might have attempted if I were younger. But what I do most is piddle about, And then when I’m done, track dirt in the house. It seems what I’m best at is making a mess, And wearing my good clothes, while I do it, no less! There’s a lot that I do that can annoy my bride, But she takes a deep breath and takes it in stride. If I am at all any good kind of a man, It;s because she is there and holding my hand. I often have wondered at the answer she gave, When awkward and fearful a proposal I made. The wedding was big and the honeymoon short, But all these years later I can happily report We’ve had many good times together And some storms we did weather. I think she still needs me. I know she still feeds me. Now that I’m 64

Stan, if you are indeed sixty four, I have twelve years on you. So take my advice and enjoy your youth.
One verse hit pretty close to home for me... But what I do most is piddle about, And then when I’m done, track dirt in the house. It seems what I’m best at is making a mess, And wearing my good clothes, while I do it, no less! Thanks for the entertainment. Have a happy 64th. Drive safe! |

Wish I was still 64, but wait that would mean I still worked for someone else, so on second thought no.
I think there really is no such thing as "bad poetry". It is true some flows off the tongue better than others, but something which expresses love can never be "bad". I too have a good woman beside me, and I often wonder at her answer to that big question so many years ago. I often wonder at her calm ways of tolerance of my sometimes bad behavior. And she says she still needs me even after 64. A very cool tradition Stan.

Stan, you don't know me but I appreciate and relate to your better-poetry-than-you-give-yourself-credit-for sentiments about being 64! (I've also enjoyed reading your posts!)

Nice job, Stan, and thanks for sharing.
I was lamenting to the wife this weekend that I have to wash my hands and change clothes to get on the computer to know how to get that dumb clutch fork in there after I installed the T90C/t-case. Better pee while I'm at it! Completely forgot about the inspection cover and how easy it is once you remove it.

Happy Burfday Stan. You have some years on me and so, give me hope that I'll still be toying around with jeeps when I reach your age. Some days I wonder. So do keep on doing this stuff both for yourself and for those of us who follow. You are encouragement and entertainment for many of us. Glad to hear you broke the chain in ear abuse. Rock on!

Happy Birthday Stan.
Your reflections on aging are a poignant reminder of the passing of time and thought provoking. Thanks for being an inspiration to the rest of us to keep "piddling around" with our jeeps, testing our limits, and making lifelong memories. It was a pleasure to meet you in person last September at the CFFC FCT 2022 and hope to cross paths on the trail again soon. |
