On my steering column, the bearing has a thin lip that is visible on the steering wheel end.  You may be able to pry the lip of the bearing away from the tube and start to wiggle it out.

 That Jeep must have had plenty of water get down into the column.

Just enough water seeping in and frequently enough to freeze up the column bearing around shaft.
Glad you got it apart without suffering collateral damage.
