I just removed the nut that holds the steering wheel onto the steering tube. And the wheel came off pretty easy using the puller. Only thing is the threads on the tube are pretty non existent. The splines are great, so no problem turning the wheel, left and right. The problem is holding the wheel down. Any suggestions short of replacing the tube? It was suggested that possibly having the tube re-threaded. Or maybe Monster Gluing the nut in place?Thumbs UpThumbs Down

Yeah, seems like re-trading the tube is the best way to go.

Check the condition of the worm gear end. If it is worn out, then get a new proper length worm/shaft.

Yeah.... glueing the steering wheel on doesn't sound like a good idea to me.

to many jeeps, parts, and accessories to list here, but apparently enough to keep me in trouble with my wife.

I suppose it depends on what kind of resto/ jeep you are going for. If your just making a toy, some sort of light duty thread locker or some silicon based adhesive would be my go to. If it's a show peice just do what above mentioned, check the worn gear and let that decide on a new shaft

I've had a chance to think about it for 24 hours, and thanks to all who have commented on this thread. No matter how I was going to use my jeep, I'll be driving on public roads. With that said, safety first has to be at the head of my list. I can only imagine driving down the road and the nut pops off and eventually the steering wheel! I don't even want to think of the outcome! So a new shaft is being ordered on Monday! Not experienced on R&R the shaft, but I've seen the threads on the subject on this forum. I'll most likely have this project done before the weather gets cooler. The temps are starting to fall below the 100 degree marks and it's going to be jeep'n time around here soon.Big smile

Again, be sure to order the correct length shaft. One style is an inch longer than the other. 40 1/2", or 41 1/2".

Apparently, because of my serial #, I'll be ordering the 41-1/2 ".
Thanks Terry

I have a 48, and it seemed by serial number it should have been the long one. Wrong, I put a 1 " piece of pipe on it as a bushing so the bearing would be seated, and after a few years cut out the extra inch and re-welded it.
Just sayin', try to be sure, cause they ain't cheap.

I'll be disassembling the steering box later today. I'll measure the shaft first before I order. Don't want to much down time, if I can help it. Thanks.

Good decision!

Steering is not something to skimp on.
