Very cool Jeep.  It is a shame that it has become an expat...  I was in VT at the same time it was there, but was not full in the jeep circle at that time.

So interestingly enough that while the need for a tracked Jeep in the area around Dutch Harbor was clear. None ever made it that for use. As the Japanese were done in the Aleutians mid summer 43.
My Grandfather served in the Mounted Calvary  (troop B 2nd Calv Ft. Riley KA) and was at Ft. Richardson at the start of the war. We have a photo of him dancing in the EM club with a young Aleut girl in a WAC's uniform. She looks very Japanese! When Grandpa was trying to reup in 1953 as a Senior Master Sgt (they took his field commission to First Lieutenant back at the end of the war) He was told with the downsizing after Korea the only way they would let him stay at rank and do another 4 years (which would have taken him to 30 years) was if he agreed to all 4 years stationed at Ft Richardson. He told them to F off he had enough of that place at the start of the war he wasn't going back.

I saw MT Tug#14 in Montana last year. I read that the MT Tug was used as the platform for the 1st T29.

Rick did you notice if the TUG's were true 6x6 drive? Would sure be interesting to see some exploded drawings of how that was done if it was.

Yes true 6x6. 2 rear driveshafts. It's a nice runner too, the owner joined us in our MV convoy to the DQ for ice cream. 40 acre turning radius.  I had a drive train foto somewhere but cant find it.

OH now I remember seeing that arrangement.  It uses one off the PTO/OD port and one from the transfer case. I guess you could put the second axle into neutral by putting the transfer case into neutral while the other shaft came directly off the back of the transmission. Neat.

Very rare and a collector piece. The gentleman made almost half of it from pictures and drawings. He did a superb job. Then he showed us the 5th wheel truck type plate that was supposed to go in the back. First question out of my mouth was all this and they left  60 HP flathead Jeep engine in it to pull a load like that???????????? What on earth were they thinking?Confused John

They pulled multiple small railroad car full of freight back and forth from the docks to the warehouses in Manila in the  Philippines pulling up to 52 ton loads. That's equal to what the Dump truck and Pup trailer I drive at work does if you include the weight of the truck. Theres a whole Wiki page on their use on railroads

I hope they had brakeman on each RR car. The Jeep sure wouldn't stop it. If you read about the old steam engines during the 1880's , Narrow gauge, they had to club them down which meant they used a wooden bar in the round mechanical brake appyling wheel.  Different toots meant different actions. Sometimes they overloaded them and had a run away which ended in peoples deaths. No OSHA Huh? John

Makes one think how they ever stopped all that weight with a jeep. I hauled a ton of coal in a trailer pulling it with my jeep (avatar)  and believe me it took a long distance with gearing down and using the breaks to get it stopped. More than once I over shot my driveway and had to back up with the load.

I would assume it would have depended on the age of the rail cars. If they were post Westinghouse Air Brakes then some sort of compressor would have been used to create the pressure to release the brakes. if they were mechanical then just like when a locomotive would have been pulling the cars their mechanical brakes would have had to had been engaged. Since I seriously doubt the cars ever got more then 10mph I doubt stopping them with one or two mechanical brakes would have been to big of a chore.
