I am in the middle of swapping in the D18 transfer case I just finished putting Jeff's gears in.  Grasshopper is a 1947 CJ2A.  After pulling the old D18 I discovered this cup washer hiding behind the input gear.  I've never seen that before and could not find it shown in any D18 or T90A drawings.  Was that actually used on any models or did a PO make a mistake?

Thanks!

-Barry

Thanks Ken!  I also heard back from Bob W who didn't think it was right either.  I really appreciate you guy's input!  Now I can continue with the transfer case swap.  I'm anxious to try it out!

my WW2 T84 box has one each side of the rear main bearing

it was there to stop the oil migrating through to the T/case

I have found them before in T90's that I have overhauled. I don't think it would make any difference whether it was in there or not. I never put one back in as I was afraid the rear mainshaft bearing would be starved for oil.

I have found them in T-90’s as well. When I replaced the transmission in my 3B for FCT, I found that the drive gear was not centered on the intermediate gear. That slinger got it there, so I used it. One FCT later, no problems so far.

Yes, Regardless of your decision, make sure the gears are flush.

Got it!  I ordered a set of various thicknesses of 1 3/8" ID shim washers from McMaster Carr to have on hand.  That way I can fine tune the input gear to line up perfect with the intermediate gear.  Thank Guys!
