Afternoon,

Tearing down my 2A engine, pulled the tappets and was mic'ing each one to see if I should get them faced or buy new ones. Getting readings (measured at 3 points on each) in the 0.6238 to 0.6245, does anyone know what the tappet OD should be? Is there a suggested clearance for the tappet to the block?

Thanks,

Doug

I don't know the OD, but don't think it matters much if they are in good enough shape to have them faced. A little too loose is better than too tight.
If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

The spec is in the back of the universal manual, do not remember what it is.

You DO have a service manual, don’t you?

yes, and keep seeing conflicting thoughts. With the passing of time, are we still saying those numbers are the path?

Just curious, where are we finding these “conflicting thoughts”? My Chilton’s and Motor’s books give the same specs as the Service Manual for Jeep Universal Vehicles. Why would they change?
According to the service manual you have some (or all) that are worn (.6238) to below the limit (.6240). They should be replaced. Clearance should be .0005” to .002”. The block is likely to be worn as well, new tappets will help you hold the clearance as close to spec as possible.
You asked for specs, those are the ones I would use.

Thank you!

Going to get my down hole gauges out and measure each bore tomorrow.
