Its funny for me the single limiting factor in doing what I want to with my Willys is that silly 10.5 gallon fuel tank. I got no problem with where it is. And I know it would be hard to make it much bigger (yes I know about the MB tank. But I would sure like to carry 20 gallons in a main tank.

I have work arounds but they are both a PITA

5 gallons in a Can and the trailer I am building will have a 16 gallon built in tank and a 5 gallon can ( PITA to transfer)

For a total off road supply of 36 gallons (holding .5 gal in reserve LOL)

If I can get 12mpg towing the trailer I have a 430 or so range. A 20 gallon main tank would be a game changer.

Many have installed a rear tank. Or you can remove the toolbox under the passenger seat and put a tank there. MTD makes their plastic tanks for either side. I have one of their plastic tanks in my CJ5 and so far am very happy with it.

If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

You could fit a tank under the rear floor.

I've thought about this as well fuel capacity is my only real discrepancy with the jeep as well

Building/installing the 24.5 gallon rear tank in my 3B was indeed a game changer.  I have not had a need for a jerry can since.  On-road range is something close to 500 miles.  I never did feel good about having those two cans on the tire carrier.  Something about the Pinto fireball effect-------

Your kidneys.
Even with more fuel capacity, you'll stop to pee every 150 miles or so; less if off road.

My Willys is built on a CJ5 frame and rides very nice. 150% better then the 2016 Kenworth T800 Dump truck I drive at work. Feels a lot like a British sports car. Direct contact with the road but not hard bouncy The wife even says the ride is nice. Everything in my suspension is new. Std. CJ5 springs and NAPA Gas shocks.

Where on earth would you go that you're not with in 450 miles of a gas station?

  Not related but maybe related:
I used to ride with a loosely connected group of motorcycle riders. Sometimes we would plan a lengthy ride ahead of time, sometimes we would meet for breakfast and decide where to go for the day. Two Yamaha 650’s, one a Special, two Kawasaki KZ1000’s, a couple of Honda 750-4’s, etc. etc. All of us could easily go 150 miles on a tank of gas, and we all had a good time. But sometimes we noticed at the end of the day or even earlier, we were stiff, sore, and owly. Then a guy joined us with a Harley-Davidson Duo-Glide. Harleys have two separate fuel tanks. His left tank had a detective cap and if he filled it full it would blow fuel out in his leg. His right tank would not draw the bottom quarter for some reason. And he didn’t get the mileage we did. So we had to stop every 50 miles to put gas in the Harley. We were amazed! Being able to get off and stretch our legs and move around a bit made such a big difference! We all felt so much better at the end of the day and enjoyed our rides so much more. After that, even if the Harley wasn’t with us, we tried to stop about every 50 miles and take a break.
Take it for what you will. BW
It is NOT a Jeep Willys! It is a Willys jeep.

Happy Trails! Good-bye, Good Luck, and May the Good Lord Take a Likin' to You!

Yup, did the Harley thing in my youth. Gave it up after awhile. Like Clint said, "A man's got to know his limitations".
I still see old-timers doing it nowadays ---- ride to eat, eat to ride. Slow reaction time and all. Good for them. LOL

There's a gas station on every corner in this land (except maybe some places west of the Mississippi). Still $2.97 a gallon on my corner today. No need to carry an extra 20 gallons anywhere. Never understood  thinking that a vintage jeep doesn't have enough fuel tank and has to be modified. Go for it. I guess that's what Makes America Great! Off roading with friends and cell phones are also great stuff. Maybe take the Suburban in trail if you want an extra 40 gallons? ........ LOL Two hours in the seat has usually been enough to get me to pull over for a stretch, a head call, a coffee, and some gas, not necessarily in that order.

there are places right here in Oregon where your 100 miles from a gas station and fuel at those stations will run $2.00 or better more then in a real town. Now 100 miles there to where your going then 100miles back to fuel leaves 150 miles or a lot less if off roading while at your place. We also plan to explore BC Canada and there are places on my list with 600 miles between stations.

I wish I still had mine Muley, even parked.
Huge bucks nowadays. Sold a nice 1978 FXE (Super Glide) in 1986 to pay for new uniforms when I got selected for Warrant Officer (USMC).
Should've parked it and took out a loan instead. Oh, well.....LOL
