After owning 5 Willys wagons I have now purchased my first 1946 cj2a. The rig has 32 11.5 r15 snow tires. I was wondering what everyone else is running on their jeeps. I still have plenty of tread , but when I get her up to around 50 mph it seems a little squirrely. One of the PO put a v6 in it, unknown make, Power steering... I believe the rear and front axels are Dana 44.

50 MPH is pushing the limit on a CJ2A, and I suspect it getting a little "squirrely" is something other than the tires.
I run 6.50 X 16 NDT tires on my CJ2A, and I have never had it over 40 MPH, and that is faster than I want to go in it. If you want to go fast you need something besides a CJ2A.

Squirrely could be tires, wheels, wheel bearings, axle castor, toe in, tie rod ends, tie rod geometry, steering box installation and or column linkages.
Try a set of your wagon wheels/ tires on it.
Wheels can be checked for runout by spinning them on a spindle. Edited by oldtime - 15 Oct. 2021 at 4:06pm |

With the bolts in the center of the valve covers I don't believe that is a Buick V6. May be a Chevy 4.3L, but I am not real familiar with them.

Tie rod and ends appear to be new, steering column is in good order, tow in looks good I checked caster and it looks ok. Yes 50mph may be pushing it. PO also put automatic tranny in it and it has an over drive.

Lift front tires off ground then rock top and bottom of tire to check wheel bearings and ball joints. Should be maybe 1/8” of play when firmly grasped and rocked.
If steering box connect rod angle is bad you will get bump steer.

Being squirrelly could be from a lot of slack in one place or a combination of just a little slack in each of a bunch of places.
In any event, a 4.3 and overdrive can get it moving faster than is really safe. Take your time even after you find the squirrel.

I run 235/75R 15's on my CJ-2A and have no trouble running down the freeway at 60mph+ I can let go of the wheel and it tracks rock steady. But then I have Saginaw manual steering on my 48. Oh and a 134L 5.38 gears and a 30% OD

No way I want to go 60mph+ in a flat fender Jeep, not that I haven't done it, I did have a M38 with a 225 V6 and overdrive that would run freeway speed, but that was when I was young and stupid enough to think nothing of it.
I flipped one over once when I was going too fast, and that was enough thrill to last me a while.

I'm not suggesting anyone drive outside their comfort range or the ability of their vehicle. But in my case I built CHUG to do exactly what its capable of. So

Going by the first photo posted showing tire tread, it looks like the fender bolts are missing. It might be a good idea to go over the rest of the vehicle and check for other missing or loose bolts!

I've seen that more than once. I suspect fitment issues, i.e. replacement body, extensive body work, etc. where the holes won't line up. When done, I would guess the assumption is it won't matter since the tub and radiator guard will hold the fenders in place.

Yep I saw the missing bolts also, he bolted it on in another spot...go figure. Yes , I have been tightening and replacing bolts as needed. Bearings are good and brakes inspected and adjusted...fluids etc.

My father-in-law leaves those bolts out on his '46. He says they caused his fenders to crack, so he never uses them. Maybe a previous owner thought similarly. We run 6.5x16 Super Traxions on the stock rims. I've hit 55 mph with ours (Stock L134 and driveline), but that's flat out as fast as it will go. Feels like 100, but it also feels smooth and solid at 55. I love driving it fast. It's as fun as any sports car I've been in, and I used to drive Vipers for a living. I also like going too fast around the corners on dirt roads. It's hilarious to me that they are loose in the corners on dirt while every other old car pushes.

Wow, now I went ahead and replaced those missing bolts last night. Did he say where the fenders cracked at?

The top corners. He's the only person I know that does this. Most folks don't have an issue and I suspect you won't either. Nice find, by the way!
