Reference photos

I think I found the date this photo was taken. The photo can be found on the Toledo-Lucas County Public Library web-site where it is described as "Michael, King of Romania", "Willys-Overland", and "1948".

It does seem strange the seat cushions are not installed. It sure would be easier to put them on with the seat frame on the bench. The mirror appears to be turned sideways and highlighted by the trench-coat.

...and Sam, I noticed that same "lean" too, but if you'll notice the paint stripes on the floor, they are off-vertical (in the 2-dimensional photo), and that would lead me to belive that what we're actually seeing is a mild perspective distortion. Sigh.

That's cause there's more tire on one side.

They did that to correct the lean. That one must have been assembled wrong-side-to. That's why it's been pulled off the line.  BW

Those old Life Magazine photos were taken in my "backyard" along the old Anza Trail, and more specifically up Palm Canyon from Borrego Springs to Terwilliger (southeast of Anza) in Anza Borrego State Park.  Plug these coordinates into Google Maps: 33.42204, -116.4768.  They probably went up the Sage Road from Hemet to Highway 79 where Berg's Roadhouse was located.  I'm not sure you can still make the drive up or down Palm Canyon anymore.  I did it in the mid-1980s (up canyon in a Toyota Truck) and it was an adventure.  The 1949 trip was coming down canyon which is usually easier, but looks like they had fair amount of water running through the canyon, so there could have been some hairy washouts in a number of areas.
