Hi - 

I have my flywheel off being resurfaced for the new clutch to go in. While everything is off the frame - I am thinking about swapping out my dead starter for the Toyota starter instead of rebuilding the original. I'll keep the original with all the other original parts that have been replaced.

Going through the forums this was the part number: Nippondenso PN 02800-2362/4

I know I will have to change the ring gear to 129 teeth - which has to get changed anyway since the original is worn out.

Below is the bell housing I have (the kids chose the paint color) - will this work with the Toyota starter?

I'm pretty sure the Toyota starter only replaces the later closed nose starters used on the 3B/CJ5, you would need the bellhsg. And the flywheel.

That bellhousing will not work with the Toyota starter. if you do some searching you will find a rather involved thread I started with all the details. You need the Bell housing that has the 6) 5/16" bolts

Just a suggestion, but wouldn't it be easier to go with one like the one I bought off ebay? Works fantastic and seller is great to work with, actually answers the phone and worked with me to get it installed correctly. You can keep your existing flywheel and housing.
 
Or maybe I don't get what you are trying to do? Disapprove

That is a great way to go - much easier than swapping everything. I'll order one - the only other ones I saw like this were $249 from this site:

Toyota started is $70.00 and available at any local auto parts.

X2 on this. Although it is your choice. (Obviously ) Me personally it makes more sense then finding the bellhousing, flywheel and any other odds and ends that you need if you go with the Toyota starter.

Plus how often does one change a starter?

I had to change the starter in my '89 Wrangler after almost 26 years.

I hope my wonderful Windows 10 system isn't going to screw this up again this time.
The only things I had to fix on my '53 Buick were the brakes and carb. Of course, a battery or 2. Some of these old beasts are pretty good.

This looked to the original starter - so 71 years old isn't bad!

I ordered the high torque one and will use the original bell housing and not swap all the other pieces out.

Sounds good. You should be very happy with the results. I discovered my old dead starter was an old Ford Tractor unit. So I guess anything would have been an improvement in my case. It is amazing how they kept these things going over the years.
And besides it would be a real shame to let that pretty RED bell housing go to waste! Wink

I know this is an old post. but do you know how long the stater is?.....compared to the stock one? did you have to modify anything on the bellousing to use it? thanks!

I am not near my Jeep for another week or so - so I can not get the measurement.

The replacement starter - I ordered and installed the high torque one referenced above and it was a direct bolt on - no modifications at all. It is approximately half the length of the original.

Good deal happy you found what you needed and happy I could help lay out what the Toyota Stater swap entails.

In my case I already had a late Bell housing (It may have come with my 1959 134L from a DJ-3A) and I was swapping my flywheel anyway to be able to use the 9.25" CJ5 optional clutch. So for me it was all about being the cheapest way to get a starter that could be easily replaced anywhere I could find a NAPA or one of the other big Chain auto parts stores.
