The picture on this site shows the top bows attached to 3 stringers. This makes sense but was it really done that way originally. I have a set of original bows I bought and as I recall, I didn’t see any bolt holes in the bows for these stringers. Thoughts?

That's not an original feature. Someone likely did that for structural stability. Looks well done at least. (makes it a lot more bulky for storage, though.)

I don’t have the sides but was able to snag a set of original bows. I’ll be making the sides soon with the specs on Art's site. Then making the side brackets. The bows are still usable, but I’m gonna try to steam some new ones to match. While the bows by themselves work, they are sloppy and move a lot. So I may end up making a center stabilizer like that pics.

I have a set of bows but no brackets. Anyone have a line on those or one to lend for reproduction?
How can I access "Art" for more info ? Thanks!

I have a question on the side rails. Where the carriage bolt goes on the top rail, the bolt goes from the outside to the inside, but ends up in the middle of the metal bracket that the top bows metal flange slides in. So doesn't that meant it will constantly rub metal to metal? Are they attached with square heads like the rest? Anyone who can provide a pic would really be appreciated.

You would use a shorter bolt for the top ones, and there will need to be a countersunk hole so there will be no bolt or nut sticking out to interfere with the metal bracket. This is a picture from when we did the side racks for #1431:

If I remember right, the instructions on the Bantam T3C page were based on measurements from an intact original set of bows and racks: http://bantamt3c.com/bantambows.htm
When dad and I made our set of side racks, we followed those instructions (with some massaging of the dimensions due to our stake pockets being a little out of sorts from farm work). The one thing we did differently was to use the suggestion of 2-1/4" carriage bolts for the bottom holes instead of the 2-1/2" carriage bolts like original. It worked out great. |
