I just took possession of this trailer. It is the trailer that has been with my '51 3A as long as anyone can remember but I'm not sure if they were purchased together or separately. I'm having trouble identifying it. I thought it was a Bantam but the "WILLYS" stamped tailgate is throwing me off. The ID plate is gone but I can see where it used to be attached. No other identifying marks anywhere that I can see after a quick crawl around it. Anybody know what it is?

I'm thinking a military T3 that someone converted with a CJ tailgate. (and a modified hitch)and the civilian models did not have a parking brake.

Can we see straighton from the axle end view pictures of both wheels? Look like solid wheels in the pics you showed.....If so you may have found your source of funds to restore the trailer.
That is a nice job someone did grafting in the jeep gate... Do NOT toss anything when you start to restore it. Especially that piece the replacement hitch is attached to. It is the remains of a lunette, and can be repaired with a new ring...Replacements for a WWII lunette are getting expensive.

Ha. Go figure. I have highly sought after military rims on a trailer to be towed behind my civilian 3A.

Looks like the previous owner saved the original reflectors when he or she put the CJ tailgate on, so you will want to save those!
You may want to check that tailgate for an ACM number, maybe it's an early one? The tailgate looks nice enough that maybe you can sell it, and put the money towards the correct rear panel...unless of course, you don't grow fond of having a tailgate back there! Also, it is hard to tell from the pictures, but that cast hook hanging off the upturned hook on the front of the tub, in photo 2, may be one of the original safety chain hooks...very hard to find if they are, so hold onto it! Look for a "TH" cast into the side of the hook. PS If that olive drab peeking through the red wheel paint is actually the original paint, you may want to measure the width of those wheels and see if they may in fact be 4" wide slat grill MB wheels instead. The photos make them appear to be the 90 degree style wheels, so they could be either slat grill or early cj2a depending on the width... Daniel Edited by uglyjeep - 30 Apr. 2012 at 5:02am |

Daniel - The number "72624" is stamped on the side of the tailgate. Does that mean anything? That hook hanging off the front of the tub is embossed with "1/4" on one side and a "D" on the other side.
My plan at this point is to clean the trailer up as-is and paint it. Even though it's not "correct", it's the way it has been for 50 or 60 years as towed by my civilian farm Jeep. I'll be sure not to cut or damage any of the components in case I (or a future owner?) decide to restore it to original condition. It's been fun trying to find out exactly what it is though. Plus, I like to know what I have just in case plans change. You never know. |

Yes, the number 72624 means that the tailgate is likely off a very late '46 or very early '47 cj2a.
The hook may or may not be original after all, but you never know. I agree with you on the use it "as is" philosophy, these trailers are a heck of a lot more handy with a tailgate in back, and they are a heck of a lot more fun when you don't have to worry about scratching up a fresh restoration! Thanks for sharing the pictures. Daniel |

The cast center piece of the axle tends to make me lean more toward a Willys MBT trailer. Same era as the Bantam t3. I have owned one. The reflectors & lights appear original to the trailer. The black out switch appears to be still intact., and just recently, a parking brake assembly sold on aanother website for @ $200. Really nice WW II era trailer worth more to military guys (like myself). It's a shame the rear was cut out & a tailgate added, but I really like how it was done!
...check to see if the reflectors have lead washers. They were used to seal the drilled holes, as the MBT/T3 trailers were designed to float across streams, etc. in combat. The wheels are not original to it, as they would have been two piece split rims (combat rims). Edited by ndrtkr - 01 May 2012 at 2:19am |

I just checked and yes, the reflectors have lead washers. Did the Bantams have lead washers too? How to tell for certain an MBT from a T-3? |

Time to look for the ACM number and check it with Chuck Lutz in the G503 Trailer Sticky for exact origin.

I know it's probably sacrilegious to suggest for a restoration but I really like the looks of the Willys tailgate.....I think it looks 'right' on there.

Have to agree Chad, one of the better looking bubba mods if it can be classified as such.
