Seems a trans /TC rebuild has become a wnter project tradition. Curious - how many have done a rebuild of their trans / TC?

I'll add my name to that list
When I bought 69750 it was a driver... barely. Amongst its ills was the typical pops out of second and TC shaft whine. Sourced another pair and refurbed them, swapped them in and then refurbed the originals for later reinstall. I think their ability to fill up with water makes them kind of a right of passage when you buy an old jeep-

That's funny, the first jeep I bought, a parts jeep, when I cracked into the tranny, nothing but oil, when I popped the drain plug, clear water cane pouring out!

I'm on the list as well. Just completed that project and enjoyed the process. It was a fill in for a 46 that a barn fell on [ body done for].

I’ve done two T90 and D18 and you can do it. Buy quality bearings (avoid chinese) and small parts kits. Novak had the better quality shafts and small parts when I last built one. Have good tools on hand: snap ring pliers, small brass hammar, brass drift. Watch/print the Stivers tutorials. Have gauges to check end play. Use Permatex #2 on bolt threads to stop weeping lube. Read up on sealed front bearings vs open bearings and make your choice (Im happy with sealed).
Boom. There it is. For me, these were the most satisfying parts to build.

I have rebuilt several T-90's including the one currently in Ol' Red. The thing wrong with most of them was second gear problems.
The D-18 in Ol' Red now was built from all new old stock parts including the case. The original case was cracked at the lower end of Texas and whoever brazed the case didn't get it straight although the brazing was otherwise very good. It leaked oil because of the warp in the brazed flat surface. I found a new old stock late model case that uses the 1 1/4" intermediate shaft and went with that. A much better set up than the original 1 1/8" shaft. |

I have rebuilt several T-90s but that was many years ago, the last time was in 1989. I have to rebuild one for my 47 soon as it pops out of 2nd, and sounds like a rock crusher going down the road. Wish I could find the dummy shafts and spacers I used for bench loading the bearings years ago but those have disappeared long ago, so I have to make new ones.
I have not rebuilt a transfer case yet, never needed to, and already have a good one someone else rebuilt to go into that 47.

If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

So far that makes 7 of us that have done the job. Fun project to do on a bench in a warm basement this time of year. Would be neat to see a picture of them being assembled at the factory.

I have rebuilt 2 T90’s and 2 D18’s in 2 different 2As
Internals gears/bearings were fine. Replaced all small parts and synchros. Not difficult at all. I did follow the service manual. You do have a service manual, right?

I second the Stiver's guide. I like the printed one much better to follow along. Make the tools he lists and make sure you have the right tools on hand. It's not that hard other than a few steps.

Rebuilding a trans / tc set is an annual winter project I've enjoyed doing for a few years. Was curious how many others have taken on the job.

Almost ALL of us have! It's a rite of passage with these jeeps. A bit like a Jedi building his own light saber. I rebuilt mine four times! (but I eventually got it right - or at least right enough) lol.

Rebuilt my first T90/D18 when I was around 16. 45 years later and I've got one on bench going thru it now.

Add me to the list. Like jackdog I first rebuilt 3 junk yard 3speeds into 1 good one when I was 16 because of necessity and lack of funds. As time went on and I could afford more dependable vehicles I got away from it. Now 48 years later I'm doing it again for fun. Most recently I've had a blast modifying a D18 to accept jpet's lower transfer case gears. There is so much great info out there to help - do your research, take your time, and HAVE FUN!
