Was looking over a couple spare trasnmissions today and noticed an odd date stamp on my 1948.  Picture below.  The main # reads A1581, but there is a number 15 stamped at an angle before this.  Any idea what it's for?

I think Willys (or Warner) changed the meaning of the stamping sometime.  Don't know how to interpret it yet.

This was on my late Dec. '47, #148295:

"K" still makes sense as a production month (Nov.) (now believe this is Oct.), "30" still makes sense as a day, but the last 2 digits are NOT the year.

I was thinking along the same lines as munkjeep. Also the 8 would coinside with "48" and the 7 with Sean's 47.

I think you nailed it!

Looking at the owner reported date stampings, it seems they dropped "4" out of the year stamp.  Still don't know what the last digit might indicate though.  Some have it, some don't.  But munkjeeps suggestion makes sense too!  3 x 8-hour shifts.

Up until about mid-46, date stampings show a 2-digit year.  eg:
  • H 28 45
  • M 31 45
  • A 26 46
  • D 22 46
Then beginning about August, no more "4", and later dates have the following final digit (1, 2 or 3):
  • H 22 6
  • K 14 6
  • A 24 7
  • D 27 8 (1)
  • F 4 7 (2)
  • B 11 8 (3)
  • ... and so on
It also seems they skipped the letter "I", probably to avoid confusion with numeral "1" (as Autolite did too).

Could be.  What's the casting date?  That usually includes the year.

Hmmm, they must have stopped putting the year in the casting?  Haven't seen one without the year.

just to ad a little info to this 9yr old thread... i just found a 10 stamped on the top of the top right ear of my side shift, where it would bolt to the bellhousing.   I dont remember hearing about this marking before.
