Hello,
Going downhill in 2nd on „engine brake“, after a couple of seconds the gear pops out. No issues otherwise, other than numerous leaks around tranny and transfer case. Some of these leaks probably coming from the shifter cover. Reading all the trouble about pulling tranny/transfer off the engine makes me kind of freaking out a bit. Do you guys think it’s already worth rebuilding the tranny? Thanks Klaus

Popping out of second gear usually indicates the syncros are worn - which does mean a rebuild may be in order.
But don't freak out! These are simple vehicles that are great to learn on! I'm sure the group here will give you plenty of good advice. If you don't have one - get a quality manual and get familiar with what you may be facing.

It could also be the poppet ball and/or spring on the shift rail.

Other possible causes can be excessive main shaft end play or shift forks loose on shift tower rails.
Loose forks are from the hollow pin collapsing. It's a simple fix that doesn't require removal of the trans/transfer. Remove the shift tower, grind off the swagged hollow pin head, punch out the hollow pin, install a roll/spring pin in its place. Roll pins can be bought at your local hardware store. If that doesn't fix it, then you're looking at a rebuild. Like Andy said, with a manual and some time/effort you can do this job yourself. The T90 is a very simple transmission and there are lots of great resources to help you... this forum, Youtube, ect. Edited by Joe DeYoung - 08 Dec. 2022 at 9:52am |

to many jeeps, parts, and accessories to list here, but apparently enough to keep me in trouble with my wife. |

Maybe worth to check the shifter tower first, then.
Can I simply pull the tower and check/refurbish it w/o messing up the transmission?

Rick Stivers on YouTube has a simple shift tower adjustment video that might help with the popping out of second gear issue, but it is likely that the synchros are worn.

In addition to the Stivers rebuild guide there is a video on the Novak Adapters under the rebuilding T-90 section that goes into the shifter/tower rebuild.

Here is the service bulletin from 1949 concerning second gear problems. Rick Stivers has a good youtube on how to shim your transmission. |

Hello,
What is the size of the roll pins which hold the shifter forks in the rail (in the T90 shifter tower)? Thanks Klaus

It’s seems next to impossible to find these roll pins, which hold the shift fork to the rail. At least over here in Europe. Metric doesn’t seem to work.
Any ideas for options? Best regards and merry Christmas Klaus

Suppose you could enlarge the holes a bit if needed.

Might be nice to upgrade to a T90C trans....just a few parts need to be swapped out to do so.
