Hey Folks - Back to rebuilding my Willys.  Got some new tires in I thought you might be interested in.  Took a long time to make up my mind on this, but finally decided on Nitto UTV Trail Grapplers, DOT legal, in an 8-ply 32x9.5x15s.  Open tread, very sticky.

You can see them next to the STA 6.50-16s.  The STAs are inflated to 40-psi to make the jeep easy to roll around in the shop but they are only loaded with the weight of the rear axle in this pic (axle is out of the Jeep awaiting for me to rebuild it (Ox locker, disc brakes, full floater, etc.).  The Nittos, unmounted, are about 1.5" taller and not too wide.  They seem very flexible but still have nice sidewall thickness and lots of bead protection.  I think Lumpy is going to love her new shoes.  I'll post a pic on the 15x6 wheels I'm using once I get them sorted out.

Keep us informed.  I’m interested in how they perform at low pressure as well as the fact that they are “sticky”.

Nitto say they're medium to soft compound tire, softer than their truck line.  Based on my experience with other UTV tires, they should be excellent at low pressure.  For example, I run 6-psi as my normal pressure with 8-ply Roctanes on our Honda Pioneer which is probably somewhere around 1,800-lbs curb weight the way we have it set up (winch, tool boxes, etc).

Being a softer compound, I wouldn't use the Nittos if a lot of road duty is called for.  Mine is 99% ranch duty and rarely sees asphalt.  Doubt it's more than 100 miles a year.

More specs on the tire for interested folks: https://www.nittotire.com/sxs/trail-grappler-sxs/

Looks nice. They ought to work great.

Not that it matters, but your post says DOT legal.

The sidewall stamping says SXS use only, and not for highway use, which means they are not DOT legal.

Another that is interested in the results of this.  Can a tire be DOT approved for a UTV and not approved for other vehicles?  I put DOT approved Kanati Mongrels on our RZR.  I don't think you need a spare with those as they will run with close to zero psi.  The caveat on all this is that the UTV tires in larger "Jeep" sizes are more expensive than KM 3's.

I am looking at a weight reduction personally from the tire combo that I currently have. I have 31x10.5x15 Wrangler MTR’s on my Willys. I’m running the stock L134 with a shaved head for a little more compression.

I believe rotational weight has a lot to do with these lower hp motors and how efficient they run and operate. Where I live there are a lot of high speed limits (40+) on most surface streets which is not a good fit for the Willys. So any advantage I can use is worth some research.

No, DOT means that it needs to be certified by testing specified  NHTSA, FMVSS and the TREAD ACT.

FMVSS is the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards etc etc. It's really boring, and outdated.

I don't have the Nitto tires, but I did go with ITP Coyote tires in a 32x10x15 and they work great!  They are similar tread pattern

I got my 30x9.5r15 Nitto Trail Grappler SXS tires! They look fantastic on my FC150. I’ll post an update when I get them out on the trail.
