Ran into an interesting scenario adjusting intake valves on an F-head. Got #1 intake valve at full open position (at toe of cam lobe). The opposing #4 intake valve was therefore at the heel of the cam lobe. In order to get #4 valve to spec, I had to turn adjusting screw to the point where the lock nut no longer had any threads to grab and lock. I am at a loss to determine why. Here is pic of the valve adjustment screw.???

Are you adjusting the exhaust's as well? I would expect so. When you have the side cover off, take a look at the #4 inlet push rod and tappet where they meet, and I imagine you'll see the problem. If you weren't planning on taking the side cover off, loosen the #4 rocker adjustment to get clear of the pocket in the pushrod, slide the rocker arm forward against the spring, and pull the pushrod out. I think you'll see the problem at that point. The side cover is going to have to come off sooner or later anyway. If the tappet is bad, well, you've got a job ahead of you. BW
Edit to add: The bottom of the tappet and/or the camshaft, where they contact each other, may be worn away. If either is bad, both are. BW Edited by Bruce W - 05 Dec. 2017 at 3:26am |

thanks Bruce. I did adjust exhaust valves as well. I will take a look at tappet and rod. Something has to be worn or broken somewhere to allow this much travel by screw.

There ya go, that's it in a nutshell. Does that intake rocker/valve operate as it should, with it adjusted that way? If the tappet and camshaft lobe have worn each other away, I would expect the lobe to be gone, and there would be little or no opening. BW Edited by Bruce W - 05 Dec. 2017 at 6:40pm |

i wouldn't run it without a lock nut
When it was on the rocker arm flopped around. It's been running very rough as of late, but no major knocking noises, etc. I will hopefully get a better idea of problem this evening.

Theirs a guy on you tube that will show you how to fix that. He shows how to fix a bent valve. Something about McDonald's Honey mustard sauce and a 4lb hammer. I'm sure it would work the same for a pushrod.

HA! I am happy to send this rod to someone with the mustard. It comes complete with the mushroom in the middle of it.

Must have had a stuck valve for that to have happened. You might want to check that valve out before installing a new push rod.

valve does not appear to be stuck. Installed replacement rod. Re checked all valve clearances and ran her a bit. Seemed to idle decent and took for a ride. Ran rough under load in higher gears.

spark at all cylinders. Moved on to check compression. 1 and 3 are great. 2 and 4 are only at about 45. I suspect cam is worn because #4 valve adjustment required adjusting screw to go further in than others after new rod was installed.
