Thank you, but that won't work on a flat head L134.

I’ve used the vintage craftsman spring compressors on both L & F heads without issue. Plus Dauntless heads.
It does not press against the block but rather it squeezes between the valve itself and the spring.
Regardless that other compressor shown is much cheaper.

The craftsman will work fine on L&F heads when the manifolds are off.
If you're working on a valve without pulling the manifolds or carb. the small one works better.

Thanks for the replies.
I'm trying to remove the valves to clean them and reinstall them.   I have an old compressor but since it grabs the whole bottom of the valve, I can't get to the retainer clips to remove the valve, the valve stem won't drop down so I can reach the retainers. The way I'm looking at this is the compressor needs to grab the perimeter of the bottom of the valve, the collar of the valve holding the spring in place, if I can grab it, the bottom of the valve would be allowed to drop down to reach the retainers.
Any words of advice here would be appreciated.

I have used one very similar to the Craftsman tool in Ken's link for more than 50 years on all sorts of flathead engines, puzzled as to why "Paulson1948" thinks it wouldn't work.
If you can't get there in a Jeep you don't need to be there!

The valve spring is held on by the round valve “retainer”.
The retainer is held on by the split “valve locks”.
The craftsman jaws are width adjustable so that the valve stem can easily pass downward dropping the locks below the retainer.
Even with that it takes nimble fingers to remove/ install the locks onto the valve stem.
Grease can be added to “stick” the locks in position when installing.
Also be sure to plug the oil galleries with rags so when removing them the locks cannot drop down into the pan.

Sounds to me like there is varnish holding the keeper to the retainer.
The small handheld unit pushed off the boss, to you can tap the top of the valve to unseat the keeper.

Have you sprayed acetone on the retainer and keeper to disolve the varnish?

If you're still looking, I have three "vintage" types that I doubt I'll need.  Two are KD and one is the shorter, with the screw in from the end like the New Britain ones that would be the easiest to use if you are doing this in the jeep. The KD's are nice, but probably a tad too long. You can PM me if you like to see pics of them.

I agree, the new britain would probably work best.
