Do you know what the holes in the rear bracket are for? The dust cap is hard to see and may not even be a dust cap. In the family photo the headlamp trim rings look body color and the retainer that holds the headlamp to the bucket with 3 screws looks crome or stainless steel.

With respect to the headlight retaining rings, it has been established that some of the earliest 2As had chrome retaining rings and then there was a transition to black before they returned to being consistently chrome. I don't think that anyone knows exactly when those transitions happened. It is uncertain enough that Sean suggested that you could get away with having your choice if your 2A was early but not too early!

That's another picture of new Jeeps with the spare wheels mounted without tires. I don't understand what was going on with this practice by W-O. Does anyone know?

I believe the spare rim came with the jeep, but the tire was an option.
Can anyone confirm? Russ |

Russ,
That is the only reasonable explanation, but the parts list does not show the spare tire as an accessory. It does show the passenger seat, draw bar, PTO, PTO front and rear, pulley drive, governor, rear seat, rear body top, chaff screen and brush guard, front bumper weight, pintle hook, front body top, heater, starting crank, capstan winch hot climate radiator, lift pump, propeller shaft guards, 2 and 4 groove pulleys but NO SPARE TIRE.

That or there was a supply problem, leave the tire off the spare and every 5th set is an extra. Then leave it up to the dealer to figure it out.

I vote for supply problem post-war. Here's the invoice by Mike G.:

Sam, it would appear that you just answered your own question......if it doesn't appear as an accessory then it must come with the jeep.......?

If you look at any of the period photos for compressor equipped Jeeps, they all were missing the tire and they used the wheel to store the hose. The Jeeps in the picture might be on their way down the street to get converted???? Odd they would have a backseat unless they were getting Westinghouse T-1s that were mounted on the pulley drive. Not sure what year those came out. Bill |

Hadn't even thought about using the wheel for a hose reel. Funny I didn't think about it considering all the shops I've been in that there was an old wheel bolted to the wall for that very purpose.

Russ,
What year would you say that the Jeeps in the manufacturing plant picture are?

Sam:
![]() Gotta remember, the parts list are for finding & purchasing maintenance parts. Willys would not have stocked tires, would have left that market to tire dealers. OTOH, for standard equipment, 5 wheels are called for. That still doesn't explain the missing spares though. Sean |

Well, to fuss a little, the parts lists appear to list every nut, bolt, washer and screw, and I'm guessing Willys didn't do a landslide parts business in ordinary fasteners either.
![]() Had to look at the parts list to avoid getting shot down after not looking and then being told that the missing tire is listed in the optional equipment and accessory group!
![]() It is fun to chase down these little mysteries, though. Unless one of you with the stashes of Willys documents turns up something, this one may elude us.

Sam,
I do have a copy of the '47 Bill of Materials. Its about a ream of paper, but I'll try to find the tire section. I believe it has a total count. That's where we found BF Goodrichs were factory as well as the Goodyears. Of course, this isn't to say that earlier 2As would have been exactly the same though and in fact wouldn't apply to the Jeeps in the photo.
