Just wondering what your opinions are on painting the willys and 4 wheel drive logos vs buying vinyl decals. I'm wanting to do all of my logos in black and I have been leaning toward stencil and painting them. Just wondering what you guy's have done on your willys and how you like the finished product???

Thanks,

Stencils get my vote over vinyl.  With a little Goggle time you can print and cut your own.  Use 3M spray adhesive to make them stick.

Stencil is the only 'factory look' in my opinion.

Stencil, man. They didn't have vinyl decals back then. They look too perfect which, IMO, is wrong for an old JEEP, even from the factory.

One more vote for stencils. Vinyl will eventually fail.

I am sure those will work fine.  A tip I read about but never tried is to affix the stencil with an adhesive and for the first coat, use your body color.  This helps seal the stencil so any paint that creeps under the stencil won't show.  Then spray on your contrasting color.

I printed out the template from the 3b page and used pencil on the back to act like transfer paper then did them by hand with a really good brush.

That's alot of work.

Adhere the stencil with stencil adhesive, fog two or three very light coats on and instant 'factory look'.

Takes longer to set up the stencil than it does to finish the project.

Stencil´s the way to go for the Tailgate 4WD Logo,

a little sprayglue does the trick for keeping it nicely flat against the gate.
Easy and rewarding.

For the embossed WILLYS i went to teach myself a little pinstriping, with a good brush and paint this
is fun to make. It´s not perfect but therapywise it felt very important acheiving these final touches.LOL

Go for it!
Freddy

I used low tact contact shelf vinyl that I found at WalMart and cut a piece 8 1/2 X 11 and printed the stencil from the CJ3B Page onto it and cut out the stencil.  It worked great with no leak through and the stencil came off easy after painting it.

For a one time job, I'd use the ebay kit, it appears to be paint mask vinyl. An automotive urethane might outlast the best vinyl out there, but I wouldn't bet money on it. 10 years outdoors is the current benchmark of premium vinyl.

MHO, I will use vinyl, why!,1) its easy, 2) this goes back to my 99% theory or 99% of the people who see it will have no clue if its correct or not,and 95% of the 99% think its a WW2 Jeep anyway, there are 5100 members of this forum world wide so of that group lets say 200 see my Jeep of the 200 there may be 5 that notice the decal is vinyl and say "Nice Jeep but you should have painted that on" and I can live with that, LOL. That being said if I were to do a correct nut and bolt build then I would paint it on.
