I have two 6 volt regulators that look very similar to me. One has the marking 2174 and says pos and the other says + or -. It has the number 2179. Can I assume either of them will be correct for a neg gnd cj2a as long as polarized? Thanks, Ted |

No. It’s obvious. The jeep electrical system is negative ground. The positive ground regulator will not work.
You do not polarize the regulator, you polarize the generator. BW

That is what I thought but I do not understand how a voltage regulator can be both positive and negative.

An old school regulator is nothing but a set of contact points to control the generator/alternator output. As long as it is connected to match the vehicle’s electrical system (- or + ground) I don’t see where polarity would make a difference unless it would cause a problem with burning or welding the contacts.

There must be a difference or they wouldn’t have made two different kinds for fifty years or so. The “+ or -“ one might have a diode or something in it to make it work either way. The “pos” one is positive ground, not negative ground, and is intended to work on a positive ground system.
You have one that is probably right and one that is possibly (probably) wrong. What I don’t understand is why you’re so intent on using the “probably wrong” one? Put the right one on and move on. BW

Just trying to understand how they are different when visually i do not see a difference. If the old one will work I would like to send the new one back and save $150. And how can the new one be + or -. It must have something to do with the polarizing. I’m very limited in understanding this stuff but my whole purpose for this build is to understand!👍

Where did you buy it? Some web vendors have technical information (like electrical schematic diagrams) available for download that we could compare. While they might "look the same", probably only a careful comparison of each electrical schematic diagrams will show difference. Or a careful visual inspection by an experienced automotive electrician. While anything is possible, I doubt that two different part numbered items (2174 and 2179) are functionally (or electrically) the same.
As mentioned, regulators aren't "polarized" --- they have to be properly connected into the circuit or they go "poof". And proper connection means paying attention to POS and NEG markings. Yes, POS and NEG markings are properly called "polarity" --- which isn't the same thing as "polarizing". "Polarizing" is a term usually reserved for generators in the automotive electrical world. Terminology matters. Do you have any books to study about automotive electricity? Good luck!

According to a web site on converting a positive ground to a negative ground vehicle, you don't have to change the voltage regulator.

But you might have to hook it up differently.

Not according to the web site, just polarize the generator. Jim

Yes, polarize the generator (properly). The POS and NEG markings on the VR are there for a reason (not meant to be ignored). Electrical components are usually unforgiving when hooked up wrong. Best case is they just don't work. Next best is they tell you by blowing a fuse or tripping a circuit breaker. Worst case is things get hot, melt, smoke, and start a fire. Can you post the link to the website? The internet is never wrong.

Old-school electro-mechanical VR's (with relays) aren't the same as more modern VR's with diode regulation. Diodes are sensitive to polarity (how they're connected). That's why I asked to see the schematic diagram of each. Everything else is just guessing. |

Exactly!, the last regulator I purchased at Napa was around $75, may have been 2-3 years ago. Lee |

Beware --- I've bought the standard brand VR and have had many failures with them... some right out of the box. Also, they will take out the generator with them if you're not paying attention to your amp gauge.

I do not have the paperwork but deal with Walck’s and Kaiser Willy’s and both say it did not come from them. I’m out of luck. Good message is always keep paperwork. Kaiser can trace back my purchases but Carl cannot.

I searched for the standard vr 2 voltage regulator and see its only $80 on amazon. If you look at the sticker on the top it say pos or neg. From what is being said on line I still do not understand how this can be if the polarity is really important. Sorry for my density!!!
