I received a good tailgate today for my Willys Wagon Project. The hinge seems frozen...is it worth soaking or should I be looking for a new hinge? Anyone have any experience with these freeing up?

If you could build you a little trough (maybe PVC pipe sectioned or piece of gutter) and let it soak in vinegar for a couple days then hit it with Sili-kroil....I bet you could loosen it up.
What have you got to lose....worse case scenario THEN you buy a hinge. |

Good suggestion on the trough Chad. I'll have to see if I have piece long enough...think I even have a couple sections of old down spout if not.
Didn't know vinegar could be used to dissolve rust...definitely cheap enough

first, be sure is apple cider vinegar, not the regular white stuff. For soaking some seat springs, I used some heavy plastic and used 2 by 4's and made a small pond. Worked like a charm.

Yes I use it alot....one precaution though, make sure you neutralize it with a baking soda bath. The bad thing is it will rust back almost before your eyes.
I'm suggesting it just as a 'brake it loose' procedure......after it is loose use the same procedure you would normally use on a part that is free. That's why I suggested the Sili-kroil ( or whatever favorite you have) This works....I just did it on a frozen hood hinge. |

I actually just got some Kroil before Christmas too, so looking forward to giving it a try.
I wonder if a puddle on that surface rust might dissolve it too, should be able to contain it in that embossed area?

I think you would probably break it loose with repeated applications of Kroil then heat from a propane torch then Kroil....the Kroil will 'creep'.
Vinegar was mentioned because you can just let it soak for a few days while you go on about your business....sort of a prelude to the normal penetrating oil procedures. |
