I have two different water pumps. In the parts list both '45 and '49 the same part # is used 637052.... On the diagramn in the '45 book it shows no pipe plug in the boss on top of the waterpump body. This one is on Jeep #34692
The next is one that is more commonly found but still retains the same part # 637052

Gary:
I've noticed the difference in pumps too. Have no answer, except maybe it was "however the manufacturer delivered them". #16279 has the pipe plug. Sean |

Water pumps get replaced.. Perhaps some of these variants are aftermarket munufactured...
It is really really hard to determine what has been on the jeep since the factory...a 20 year old water pump can be just as grungy as the original 60 year old one. Also a rebuilt pump may have originally been on any flathead. jeep motor from WWII on up.
Do the pumps exhibit a casting number or part number anywhere? Mine don't seem to...and they are all loose from engines as well.
I guess we need to see factory photos on this one to determine correctness of plug or none??
FWIW, the MB/ GPW guys seem to think no plug is WWII, Plug is CJ. It would make sense that the '45 book would show a WWII leftover part. Edited by F Bill - 23 Nov. 2006 at 9:48am |

Confusion reigns again.
The same pump part number is used in all 3 Willys parts lists: 639992 However:
the '47 list STILL shows a metal radiator tube w/fitting for heater return as well.but then ... the '49 list shows 1-piece all-rubber hoses for after #170064Since the Harrison heater was on the wrong side of the tub to tap into the lower radiator hose, I'd guess that the tapped fitting in the water pump was phased into production in anticipation of the change in heater location. The change from metal tube to rubber hose for similar reason: the metal tube was no longer necessary. Sean |

Check Service Bulletin #787 it states this change that took place in 46
Water Pump - The water pump body on the Model CJ-2A is now drilled and tapped
for the installation of a water heater, eliminating the neccesity of this operation being done after the vehicle is built. A 3/8" plug is easily removed when a heater installation is required. |
