According to the Willys manuals, there were at least 2 (and possibly 3) different gauges used in CJ2A.
  • the '45 parts list calls for # 640767
  • the '47 & '49 lists call for # 640762 (Auto-Lite)
  • the '49 also calls for # 647886 (Stewart-Warner) interchangeable w/640762.
I believe the '45 part number is a typo.  Should have been 640762. I have found LOTS of typos in the '45 manual.

I believe this one is the first to be used.  Autolite #10765A (essentially same as MB, but black bezel):

I've seen this one in many CJ2As:

This second one may be:
  • an undocumented alternate to the first one, or ...
  • the later Stewart-Warner, or ...
  • a service replacement from later years
There are no manufacturer markings on either gauge to determine for sure.

The capillary tube is spiral wrapped w/round wire coil for protection:

and partially covered in asphalted loom, from gauge rear through firewall grommet:

If yours is inoperative, and you're adventurous, you might be able to repair it yourself:

Bill:

Which one you referring to?  270º or 45º sweep?

Doesn't matter though.  For now, neither is for sale.  Gotta use the good one until the proper one gets fixed.

Bill:

The second one came out of my '46.  I didn't think it was original, but now I have doubts.  I went back through my archive photos, and found both types in CJ2A throughout '46 & '47.  It is probably another case of Willys using a second source w/out documenting it.

And that's the working one.  Have to hang on to it.

Low:

Mechanical gauges are typically reliable & durable.  Unless you cut the tube, not much to go wrong with them.  All the '48s that I have photos of have that type.

In order to make the connection between engine coolant and the gauge a bushing is required for the capillary tube bulb at the end. This bushing screws into the right side of the cylinder block head.

It has 7/8" hex head and 1/2 14NPT external threads. It is also threaded on the inside for the capillary tube nut, 18TPI. The part nimber is A-17160 also listed in the 1949 parts list for Stewart Warner gauge application is 647889. I do not know if there is a difference between parts by number.

I have seen regular pipe reducing bushings, 1/2" x 3/8", used in this application. The original part is a machined bushing however. Note the shoulder on the ID of the nut itself to support the capillary tube bulb and hold it in place. I always apply NeverSieze compound on these parts upon assembly.
The capillary tube is very fragile and breaks easily. Especially if the unit has been assembled for a long time. The parts corrode together, thus the need for the Neversieze. I have been somewhat succesful in removing these parts without breakage by turning the gauge in the dash as I turn the nut in the cylinder block. The capillary tube can be repaired if if breaks, if you have a valuable gauge, save the bulb so it can be reattached to the tube itself. I have used some gauge restoration folks for this service. These photos show a reproduction temp gauge capillary tube but an original A-17160 nut.

Howard,
can you point me toward a capable gauge restorer?  When I pulled the bulb out of my block the wire to the tube broke.  Tube seems fine, but I'm not sure how to repair the break in the wire.  I'd like to keep all the original gauges in this 2A since I'm trying for a full restoration.

Thanks.

Mike:

I have no personal experience with any of these places, but others have been quite happy:
And some other places that I don't recall hearing reviews of:
There's many more too, if you Google search for them.

Thanks Sean,
I emailed all of them with a description of my problem and a request for a cost and time estimate.  We'll see who comes thru.  I'll share what I find out.

Mike:

Hang on to your butt !  Costs I've seen from others have been steep.

Generic replacements are cheap, $20-$30, accurate repros run $75.  Repair/restore your original tends to $100-200 from what I've seen.

Edited for reality. I've yet to see a repro that was completely accurate (font size, etc).

From this info, am I safe to assume that my gauge is a later Stewart-Warner 647886 replacement?

There is a number on the side: 356BW60.K81
It's got a chrome bezel - which if it's a later type is going to look interesting! I wouldn't mind if it was the early type thoughWink If it's a later one then I will just paint the bezel I guess.

These folks offer a very good reproduction gauge. I have used several now and have been quite happy. This is the APT Instrument. They can be had from a few sources.
The wrapping on the capillary tube is not the old flat style but the tube IS the correct length, unlike most. Also the gauge itself is practically identical to the old style original. These do have an illuminated dial feature but I don't hook it up and you cannot tell unless you look under the dash.

I keep kicking myself for not buying one when they were only $49.  It is the correct dial markings.

The flat wrap was GPW only.  Willys all had the round wire wrap.

Sean...I bought six of them when they were something like 45.00 (?) each for three at a time...only have one spare left now. I still have some original take outs, mostly Ford style I guess, but all are broken in the usual manner. Maybe I will try the repair route sometime...in my spare time...
I have wanted to try removing an original by rotating the whole gauge and tube as an assembly to see if it would help from breaking the capillary tube at the engine block. They get awfully coroded there.
I am still and always will be a Ford GPW guy...I had forgotten that it was only a Ford thing with that flat wrapping. Henry was an odd duck about wanting to keep his stuff separate from Willys and sure went to some length to accomplish it...Smile
