No, this is not a trail repair... I'm making a custom coat rack for my father in laws birthday and I want to use valves for the actual coat hook.  I'll weld them to a metal base. I'd like to keep them polished since they look cooler and the paint will eventually wear off anyways, but my question is will they rust?

I figured if they were not magnetic, they are probably mostly SS and I don't have to worry about rust, but if they are magnetic, it's probably a mixture of metals.  The problem is, the head of the valve is non magnetic, but the back end of the shaft is very magnetic.  This pen shows the point where the magnetism stops. Above the pen is magnetic, below the pen is not.

I guess I could just polish them up and clearcoat them, but if they won't rust, I'd rather just do that.

Any input?

The heads are made of Eatonite don’t really know about the stems.
Not sure exactly what eatonite is but i would expect a large percentage of nickel.
Stainless steels have chromium added.

I have an old valve out in the hangar that I pulled out of an aircraft engine about 10 years ago. I pulled it because it was pitted bad on the back of the head and lower stem but I don’t think it has changed in appearance since the day I pulled it.

If you have any spare pieces you could experiment with the welder. I would probably use TIG or maybe oxy/acetylene for a project like this so I could try different fillers without any hassle.

I suppose a valve would be too hard to be practical to drill and tap to accept a screw.

I would try stick electrode nickel rod using ac current.
TIG should also work and filler rod partly depends on what your welding it to.

I have 12 valves, i only need 4 of them.  Ive already tried cutting and welding one of them.  Worked fine.  Sounded weird, but welded fine. After welding, I hit with a hammer to see how it welded. The shaft started to bend, then it broke after about 10 heavy hits. The weld held up fine. Good enough for me.

I got the coat rack finished.  I may need to repaint it though.....

Backstory:
About a month ago I was walking around my FIL's pole barn and he was trying to give away some of his stuff since he's trying to slowly clean it out.  He had these valve covers sitting on a shelf and said "These are from a 1959 Ford Y-Block, I'd like to sandblast them, paint them grey, and hang them on the wall someday."

I "think" he said grey....

I knew his birthday was coming up so I thought I'd take care of that little project for him.

He calls his place "Thunder Road Garage" He has a big crankshaft mailbox with his logo on it, another big "Thunder Road Garage" sign on the front of the pole barn, even one of his old Ford trucks has the logo on the doors.  He's big into 50's Ford trucks.

I found the correct valve cover stickers online but I won't put them on until he's ok with the color. They are just sitting on there right now. His pole barn is red so I used red for the vinyl decal at the top.

That's really neat. Beautifully done.
I have a ton of Chevy push rods and valves and use them for many things. I even welded a valve onto the rear of the '2A passenger seat where it sits on the floor. Pushrods make great hangers too. just drill a hole and hammer them into a stud in the garage, and you can hang most anything on them.
