Thanks Guys... I ordered new hubs this morning. I'm still debating on pulling the gear set out and checking the interior gear bushings. In the past I've seen the gear ratio stamped on the ring gear, but not on this set. Did they put it somewhere else? Or just not mark them? The "oil" in the case looked just like cake batter! Just didn't smell the same...so I didn't taste it...Wink I've found the torque spec for the pinion/yoke nut. How about the torque spec for the hub nuts? MG

Thank you! One last thing, what is the benefit of the left hand lug nut studs? I'd like to change them all over to right hand thread....MG

If not properly tightened, a right hand thread lug nut or bolt on the driver side can and will work loose.

That is the case for any lug nut.

Look up the user “metal shaper” on YouTube. He does a pretty good video of the year down and reassembly of the rear axel.

Well, I figure that if it was an issue with right hand lug nuts coming loose, all the cars on the highway would have right and left hand studs and nuts...I've been bending wrenches for almost 40 years...and only seen wheels come off a few times...everytime it was because of human error...MG

That's not "work"; the other thing is.
There's a reason it's called Ol' Unreliable

I turned it over with the starter for the first time in 30 years.
Great to hear it turn and freely, at that. Smile
Sadly the oil pump has lost it's prime.
One thing at a time.

Dan and I took "Popeye the Coast Guard Jeep" on a 90 mile circle in the Black Hills this morning.  I have been driving the '52 M38 around town for a while.  This was the first out of town run.  The Pinto engine runs like a Swiss watch.  In 10 days we will find out just what kind of trail Jeep "Popeye" will be.

As a retired Coast Guardsman, I would love it if you would post a picture of "Popeye" here...
