followed the suggestion of some forum members and sprayed PB Blaster on the springs to dampen some squeaks/squawks. of course i missed the target some and started undercoating. regarding the sound issue, it is doubtful i will notice any difference due to the high decibel output of the tractor tires.
then got close up on the latest rock contact scars which some will appreciate and/or laugh at as the severity is so low on the scale and it points to my lousy driving abilities. really, i knew that rock that hit the skid plate (twice, two runs) was there but just couldn't seem to get to passenger side enough. it IS in a foot and a half of mud. |

If you’re going to bash rocks on a regular basis, getting a 2nd skid plate and bolting together with the first can be helpful. I actually run 3 skid plates bolted together and still bend them.

Also consider trimming the lower front fender edge flush with the step. And there is always the option of adding some clutch peddle bashing protection.

thanks guys and Stan, i have read just about everything you have contributed and was very intrigued by the stacked skid plate idea a year ago. i have another plate, but felt like i was not getting into enough trouble to warrant bolting it on.
now, i am little more concerned for the center cross member now being bashed backwards. the skid does not hit the ebrake... yet. Stev, thanks for the trim idea. it kinda did it on its own. and, yes, the clutch skid is on the "to do" list along with spring shackle skids. but the best thing is... no stress. this Jeep is running well and is "meant to be bent"!

this may be one of the best quotes pulled from this site:
"these little rascals were engineered to run on dirt roads for a few months then get blown to bits." Jim Fischer 2009 so, this one has survived 75 years and deserves to show a few bruises.

I've never understood that little fender line detail.....I always trim mine if nothing more than to just make it look 'right'.

ratz. ok, headed out to the barn to see what i can trim off. then paint.
then what? cripes, need longer bolts for the stacked skid plates. prolly gotta go tractor supply for high grades. doubt i have any on hand to re-purpose. and then bust out the welder to make skids from scrap material (old bed frame pile out back). kinda want to make some simple body bash guards (full sliders wont fit) out of angle steel. but will be difficult with the axe so low being in the way.

Replaced the alternator, belt and added liquid fix in a can ( ring sealer) since it smokes out the tailpipe.

You can cut them flush, but you might have trouble getting a nut started if you have to take the perch off in the future. The best thing is to fabricate or buy a skid plate that covers the ends of the u bolts. Here’s an example like what I have on mine. |

Added some stars to the rear and hood of my GPW. They turned out super crisp thanks to my vinyl cutter. Debating on what markings to do next. Probably re-do the registration numbers and maybe the specs on the passenger side.

got my on-board kit packed tight and in the tool box. it is amazing just how much will fit under the seat with a little energy. my kit is pretty minimalist and not designed for an expedition. but will suffice for a few days on the road and easy off-road adventures.
here's what alls in there (the red tube is far forward, right in pic above, out of view) this includes a pimped out first aid kit (i formerly was a wilderness EMT), jack, Viair, recovery straps, technora ropes and slings, rigging carabiners and shackles, 2 different saws (Sven saw and pocket Silky saw), collapsible Craftsman lug wrench, emergency rain jacket, tyvek suit (emergency cover, coverall for getting under vehicle), jump starter/usb charger/12v outlet, hatchet, mini sledge hammer, winch controller, hose for gas can nozzle extension (and listening for vacuum leaks per Bruce W), collapsible water bucket, and not shown: siphon hose and a quart of oil. this cool red tube below contains tire patch kit, electrical repair, tiny WD-40 (in eye drop bottle), lube oil pen w/needle, Milwaukee demolition screwdriver (screwdriver, pry bar, chisel), magnetic swivel head LED flashlight, rescue tape, duct tape, twist ties, cable (zip) ties, green scrubby, silicone sealant, air gauge, lug sockets, whistle, mini pry bar, windshield tie-down strap, and adjustable wrench (not in photo).
