Then perhaps some folks are just being over-dramatic. The hobby is safe.

$430+$40 Wacko... and I have no problem with it.  It foolishness, but nobody forced the buyer.  Everyone here was free to make the same awful decision, lol.

Moving on.

Basically just 2 bidders on that item
The winning buyer, 5***3 is not for real.
He has had zero previous purchases.
And he will not follow through on this purchase.
He is simply messing with the other bidder for unknown reasons.
And why the other bidder was willing to go so high is also unknown.
It’s even possible that the two bidders are one and the same.

This one is my nomination for insanity. It had been listed for a while with, surprisingly, no bids. I'm wondering if he is going to try again.

It ended on 1/5 with zero bids. It has been relisted several times.

Best offer. I didn't get any offers. I did list it several times with a high BIN price, but my offers were open for anything over a $1.  I guess the market shifted from taillights to chaff screens.

If you scroll way down it's still visible...

I don't begrudge the seller, in a free market you can ask whatever you want... the market will let you know when you're close (the booze infused chaff screen auction being a statistical outlier and possibly theater).  I do however, find "asks" like this to be a waste of everyones time.  It's whale fishing at best.  Keep in mind it works both ways or the phrase "what's your I don't want to sell it price?" wouldn't exist.

I've both paid (a little) too much and gotten great deals, and I'm prone to let both know.  Reasonable people will agree to disagree on price and move on.  In the end all you can do is try to be fair with folks you deal with... and ignore the ones you don't.

With all due respect, I didn't find "best offer" [or make an offer] anywhere... sure, someone could contact you and make one but I wouldn't waste my time at that price point.

Not on that one. That was the last time it was listed. There were several before that. Not a big deal.

It was definitely a whale fishing expedition. That’s why it was on eBay.

...and like I said above, I don't begrudge you for it.  The market will determine whether it sells or not (in the absence of princes from Qatar restoring jeeps).  The juxtaposition, however, is priceless-

I mean, real talk... at $1500 to play, this isn't really for sale is it? ...it feels like a "I don't want to sell it price".

This is different from Greg's intial concerns (Full disclosure I've bought stuff from him in the past, and will again... ).  From a "hobby" standpoint, the real enthusiasts are alive and well, IMHO.  I've had numerous folks send me parts gratis, for the cost of the ride... I've paid that forward where possible.  Of the little bit I've sold I usually ask what I paid...hobby.  To a ridiculous extent not found in most places, I find asking prices and negotiations amongs jeep peeps to be fair both ways.  It's possible, though unlikely, that I've only dealt with the cream...

Ignore the noise.

Lastly, and I won't go into detail here, I kinda take offense at you taking a swipe at classic enterprises.  I have no idea the details regarding the screen that ired you so, but I've found them to go above and beyond to help me out.  To a fault.  I'll PM you the details if you have any interest-

There was no offense meant toward Classic Enterprises.  I know they are a quality business.  I emailed them prior to listing the chaff screen on eBay to see if they could use it to create a reproduction of an original since no one currently makes one, and I heard through the grape vine that they were thinking of doing one.  So, I offered it to them, but never heard back.  Still haven't heard back.

The insinuation that comes across (to me anyway) is that you're irked that they blew you off, so you put it on ebay... Sounds completely irrelavent is all, given the general topic.

I going to (re)say this and move on, as this isn't really fruitful... I have no issue with you making a killing on the screen, and your starting bid of $100 was fair, imo.  The market has spoken, even if slurring it's words.  I've defended you in PM's, lol, I mean... what are you supposed to do?  Put a cap on the high bid that your willing to accept?  Greg's thing (as I understand it) is more to do with the meatballs that would drop that kind of money on it pricing out the folks that are smart enough not to go that high.  The conversation really had nothing to do with you beyond your good fortune until you stepped up and scolded "everyone" about hoarding and not selling treasures, presumably to make them available to the regular hobbyist (though I suspect that may have been more targeted and personal) all while asking rent/mortgage money for a tail light.

Stepping down off my soap box... (I sold my high horse to buy a keyed coil, but I guess now I have to sell it to make it more accessible.  $1500 sounds about right.)
