'm still trying to learn about my newly acquired '47.

These wheels do not appear to be original. I had to replace a tube and had to go to a few places just to get them to work on it. Anyone know what they might be from?

Is that a split rim design? Ifso, I've seen one like that before and I'm 99% sure it is not a stock civilian JEEP wheel.

Sure looks like a split rim to me but I have never seen one on a Jeep. Back in the days a lot of trucks had them. My guess is that it is off of an old Ford given the hub size and lug spacing. Yeah, a lot of tire shops won't touch a split rim anymore.

Maybe factory jeep Fc-170 15" heavy duty option. Thats the only 15" jeep split rim I know of. Kinda rare but nobody seems to want to mess with them. I had 2 of them that I drug around to jeep swap meets for 2 or 3 years before I got rid of them. Good conversation piece though.

Well, whatever they are from, they have to go. Not looking forward to buying a whole set of new rims.

Micah, in the several years I dealt with split rims I never had one blow out on me. We had a cage in the shop where we inflated them. There were a few dents in it I'll admit but none were from me airing up a tire. They don't scare me and usually the problem is from someone who bends the ring too much and springs it out of shape. Out on the roadside repairs we had chains we would wrap around the wheel so the ring wouldn't fly off to the next county if we did something wrong.

I've been told by a tire shop one time that split rims were an insurance problem. My 71 Ford F250 4x4 had split rims from the factory and by the mid 80's I had a hard time finding a shop to work on the tires. I bit the bullet and got 5 single piece 16" rims and no tire shop had a problem with that.

I will keep these on for the time being so that I can get her on the road and have a bit of fun. In the next coupled of years, I plan to completely disassemble and return her to factory original. Since these wheels do not appear to be original, they will get replaced.

For some reason, I have this disease that causes me to disassemble my cars and drain my savings account. This will be number three and will hopefully be the easiest. Number four has been waiting for a while. If I could just win the lottery ....

We used to inflate them under the arms of the lift in the service station I worked at as a 21 year old.

If you haven't gotten rid of them, most shops that service forklifts or industrial equipment will be happy to work with them.

We have a shop in Athol that does more split & multi-piece rims than 'regular' ones.

I will keep them as an extra set. The tires on them are studded. So they would be good for the wintertime only.

I want to return her to original. So five new 16" rims and original type tires will be on order.

This brings into mind two questions:
1) Tire recommendations.
2) A powder coat formula for Universal Beige.

Well, it is May and I'm still running my studded snow tires. I think it is time to break down and buy some reproduction rims and NDT Firestone tires. Before ordering, I want to make sure that the rims are going to fit over my 11"CJ5 (?) drum brakes. Anyone know of any issues?

Where are you guys getting your tubes at?

As for the Universal Beige, I hear DuPont powder coating #RAL-1002 is a match.

Thanks,
Micah

I got my tubes and tires from Summit Racing.
Since they have a warehouse in Reno, you should be able to get them pretty fast.

Jeeper,
Thanks for the confirmation.

Stan,
Those are the exact tires and tubes sitting in my shopping cart. Thanks also for the confirmation. I might pick them up this week. Supposedly in stock but I have had some issues with ordering Omix parts from Summit. I had to cancel my parking brake parts order last week. I got them to give me a $100 gift certificate for the trouble. It is nice having them in town.

My issue now is do I powder coat them now or pull it all apart down the road when I do a full restoration? I have a M416 trailer that I want to paint to match the Jeep, Luzon Red. I would need to pull those rims apart too.
