how incredibly pissed off and disappointed I am. So I had a similar experience to what Garage Gnome had here.
http://www.thecj2apage.com/forums/oil-pump-lock-up_topic18195.html I originally thought my cam gear was still good after shoving a finger in the block and feeling the teeth. After dropping the pan today to fish out the pump gear teeth I found this. So now I get to replace the cam on an engine with 10 seconds of run time. I called Melling last week and they did send me a replacement pump. I'm going to call tomorrow and find out if I can get any compensation for the NOS cam their product ruined and the gaskets I have to order. Edited by wyowillys46 - 13 May 2011 at 12:13am |

Ouch! Sorry to see that, makes me wanna They better compensate for all that damage.
I can see this going into the products review section... Are you going to reuse your original pump and not use the new one? FWIW, I stuck a camera lens up the oil pump hole and had a flash light on the distributor end. I bumped the engine around taking while taking pictures. Afterwards, I downloaded them on my computer and was able to see that the cam gear was fine.

I would have them pay for a complete engine overhaul, that metal had to go somewhere.
You now have metal in your oil passages, bearings, etc. Edited by sireland67 - 13 May 2011 at 4:34am |

Were all 3 of these failures with Melling replacement pumps? None were original Eaton types?

This is a new one that I've never heard before. This is a good warning for those doing an engine rebuild.

I think Garage Gnome's was a Melling and mine was too.
I'm going to pull a rod cap and check for swarf/debris. I don't think it could have drawn any metal into the engine though. One, because it shut off as soon as the gears broke. Two, since the oil pump could no longer be driven from the cam my repeated attempts to crank it over wouldn't have sucked anything up. Edited by wyowillys46 - 13 May 2011 at 4:18pm |

Have either of you disassembled these pumps to determine what froze? Would be interesting to know the cause.
Would surely be reason to avoid Melling replacements. Sean

I didn't disassemble it. I figured I had, they might not have sent me a replacement. I had the cover off though, and there was no debris in the pump. With the drive gear clamped in a vise, the body could be turned (with some effort) using a pipe wrench. I think either the spacing between the gear and top of the housing were off, or something happened to cause the shaft to gall within the housing.

That's understandable!
And that's after it had cooled down! I'd agree, insufficient clearance somewhere, heat expansion locked it up. Is it the type that has 2 meshing spur gears, as opposed to the inner/outer rotors? Sean

I can't turn mine at ALL and when I did take it apart, I found nothing unusual. The shaft that drives the gears is at an angle, so I think mine had a bad bearing or something and caused the shaft to angle and lock up some how.
If it were me, I would reuse the original pump or try to find a decent original in my next Lhead rebuild. The Mellings are starting to give me a bad feeling even though they are quality pumps.

Thing is the engine ran only 10 seconds at most. Not long enough to heat the pump to operating temp. The kicker is that at cranking speed it put out at least 15 PSI oil pressure!
The Melling was the two gear type. The original Eaton I've got is a Gerotor type. Edited by wyowillys46 - 17 May 2011 at 5:33am |

Carl might want to watch what packaging he ships his parts out in. Got my gaskets and the NOS cam in today.
I almost flipped out and had an aneurism. The packaging was torn in one spot though. A closer look revealed this. Crisis averted. Thank goodness. I thought I'd be facing another week to get an actual NOS cam in. Why they're wrapped in Juan packaging is a good question. Maybe there's a stack of NOS cams that were left in PI after the war. |

That would be my guess as well, no telling how many tons of spare parts were "abandoned in place" (military terminology for "I'm not dragging that stuff home with me" |

Your broken gear looks dry, were they dry teeth when you tried the initail start?
When we used to rebuild SBC, we would coat every touching the cam including the cam, with E.O.S. (by Chevy). The cam is so critical during the inital start.
Druing one of our rebuilds, we had a chunk break off of a lifter face . Not too happy about replacing the cam either (broken lifter chipped up the lobe face.
It dose seem strainge because there's a history, though. What a pain.
