PLet me first reference the axle assembly.
The wheel is mounted to the wheel mounting surface WMS. Obviously that is the brake drum. The “Tread” width is relative to the distance from WMS to WMS. And “tread” is also effected by the “wheelset”. In general wheels can be “inset” , “outset” or “centerline”. Most but not all early Jeep wheels were inset. In fact they are approx 3/4” inset. This implies the WMS is 3/4” outbound from the rim centerline. Due to the multitude of changes it is best to reference a specific model and vintage whenever that is feasible. and what you state on inset verifies my findings of:
variation between (positive) .93 and .43 offset or close to 3/4 in.

Yes, “inset” implies that the tread centerline has moved “in”.

There are a few exceptions but most all early Jeep wheels were near exactly .75” inset.
That said I have had very little exposure and so I’m not familiar to the earliest jeep wheels of the 1940’s. |

ah ha. the Kelsey-Hayes (they are marked K-H as seen in the photo) are dead on .75 in (3/4 in.) inset as you state.

Yes the standard CJ wheel 1945-1963 was typically a KH and was 16” x 4.5”.
They weigh in at near 19 pound each and the weight can vary a bit due to exact metal gauge that KH had access to. Cj’s had two wheel options and wheels from some other model jeeps in some instances are a direct interchange. That implies the two used a wheel having the exact same part number.

The standard wheels typically had 8 gauge discs (.128). The various heavy duty wheels typically used 6 gauge discs (.162) your statement above verified (old, non calibrated instrument) and powder coat: K-H first pic, unidentified that looks heavy duty second pic and i have another spare that may be a Ford rim that is the heavy duty thickness. In most instances the rim and disc will be of the same gauge.
But that also depends on which specific wheel. For instance the 5”x 16” wheel was a heavy duty option on most early cj’s. And it weighs in right near 24 pound . That same wheel was standard on most of the early pickups and here again vintage makes a difference. That’s all the time I got for now...

i have found a wheel that will work for my purposes. but if any of you have any worthwhile information to include regarding the varied mix of wheels and sizes please input for others that may need some help.
it turned out one of the wheels i have is Kelsey Hayes (marked K-H) and is a heavy duty 5 inch rim.
