    Posted: 16 Feb. 2021 at 5:50pm
Hey all!  I've been working through my 47 CJ2A and we've hit a speed bump trying to sort out the rear brakes.  We tried everything we had at our disposal to remove the rear drums without success.  I know there are some companies that sell pullers for the rear hub that work for the Dana 41 setup, but I'm hard pressed (pun intended!) to shell out $150+ on a tool that I'll need for a day.

If anyone has a rear hub puller that's lying around, please give me a shout.  I could even go for a rental arrangement if you want the tool back after I'm done.  I had my eyes on the one from Kaiser Willys but will take anything that will get the job done.

Location: Downstate NY (willing to pay shipping if not local)
Price: Negotiable, looking for something in the $50 range

I'm up for any creative solutions too, so hit me with any suggestions you might have.  I tried searching with no luck so far.  Thanks!

For what it's worth, I bought the KW hub puller and can't live without it. Works better than all other measures I've tried. You might need it more than once, especially since it's an old Jeep with a questionable hub design.

Have you tried your LAPS?  They frequently have loaners or rentals

If you pay someone $50 for the use of theirs and pay the shipping twice, you're going to have nearly $100 in it anyway. For $60 more you will have one to call your own. Or give KW $160 for one, use it once, then advertise it for sale here at a bargain price and get most of your money back.
Or rent it out to other guys until it fails to come back or comes back broken.

I tried Autozone and Advance Auto. Haven't tried Pep Boys or looked into other options yet. The 'master puller kits wouldn't fit the rear on this because the studs for the lugs aren't long enough to reach (need a deeper well in the middle of those pullers).

Thanks for the links. I was looking yesterday and they have a number of universal 3 bolt pullers similar to what you posted that look like they could work but I haven't pulled the trigger yet since some of the YouTube resto videos I was watching had warned against using those.

Were you able to use one of the universal 3 lug pullers before on the 2A?

Mine works GREAT! You are the one that has to decide about what puller you want.
If you go to your Service Manual on pg.200 fig. 236 it shows the correct Wheel Hub Puller.

One thing I would recommend to get and use with the hub puller would be a soft point. That and some grease in the center of the soft point will keep you from screwing up your $60+ puller or the end of the axle shaft.

Yup, crack a hub or warp a drum using the wrong tool and that 60 bucks is spent.

I sprung for the OTC hub puller (the one with three legs) some 40 years ago and have used it at least 4 times on my own jeep and while I was a mechanic I used it several other times on customers jeeps. A quality tool.

Don't fool yourself that you will only use it once. If you keep the jeep you will be using it more than once just to work on the brakes, let alone any axle work that might need to be done.

It's one of those 'must have' tools

I'll fess up to having 3 of the OTC's at different places I end up working on brakes, but I also donated one to the Thirsty Dirt Ranch... It was even bigger than the OTC.

If I was planning to keep it, I wouldn't be so worried about the price of the tool because I'm sure you're 100% right.  At the moment though I don't see me keeping it much past the rebuild.  The roads here are too busy and hectic to get much joy out of driving it locally, and my two young daughters will be in car/booster seats for a while still making it impractical to drive the rest of the family anywhere in it with me.

The jeep was my grandfather's and has been sitting in his garage for ~15 years since he passed.  Now that I have the space and resources to work on it, my goal is to cut my teeth learning all of the older technology while I turn it back into something like when he was driving around and plowing in it 30 years ago.

Thanks all for the feedback, and I'm looking forward to keeping you posted on the progress!
