I will pick up a socket - since I have the nut off the left, I can take it in and get the right size. As for 'vendors' ... the only place I have is Walck's

As for brakes being important - my plan is to get them relatively functional and then take them to a mechanic to give them the thumbs up and set them properly (at least the first time).
